Obama Administration Opposes FDR’s Prayer at WWII Memorial

Conservatives and Republican lawmakers are furious after the Obama administration announced its objection to adding President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s D-Day prayer to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.


The objection was reportedly raised during a congressional hearing on Republican Congressman Bill Johnson’s bill – the “World War II Memorial Prayer Act of 2011.”

“It is unconscionable that the Obama administration would stand in the way of honoring our nation’s distinguished World War II veterans,” Johnson said. “President Roosevelt’s prayer gave solace, comfort and strength to our nation and our brave warriors as we fought against tyranny and oppression.”

Roosevelt’s prayer asked God to give the allied troops courage and faith, saying: “With thy blessing we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy.”


Fox News adds that Robert Abbey, the director of the Bureau of Land Management, said any plaque or inscription bearing the prayer would “dilute” the “elegant” memorial’s core message and therefore “should not be altered.“ Does Abbey mean to say that the memorial would no longer appear elegant if it contained a reference to ”God?” It appears so:

    “It is not a judgment as to the merit of this new commemoration, simply that altering the Memorial in this way, as proposed in HR 2070, will necessarily dilute this elegant memorial’s central message and its ability to clearly convey that message to move, educate, and inspire its many visitors,” Abbey said in written testimony.

    Abbey explained to lawmakers that altering the memorial would be contrary to the Commemorative Works Act — a law that prohibits “encroachment by a new commemoration on a existing one.” It also respects the design of the “completed work of civic art without alteration or addition of new elements.”

    “For there to be objections to demonstrating a faith in God at critical points in our nation’s history – particularly D-Day – boggles my mind,” Johnson said. “I was very surprised they were going to object.”


Meanwhile, Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council said he is not surprised by the objections.

“This is further evidence that the administration has created an environment that is hostile towards American history – but in particular towards Christianity,” Perkins told Fox News. “I hope America wakes up and realizes what this administration is doing to this country and how they want to radically and fundamentally change America.”

Give us strength, too -- strength in our daily tasks, to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces.

And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be.

And, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee; Faith in our sons; Faith in each other; Faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose.

With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister Nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil.

Obviously, as a Christian, I have no objection to the inclusion of an historically appropriate prayer. However, I do raise an eyebrow at those "pro-faith" sorts who seem to want to raise issues of prayer, or the Ten Commandments etc, purely as wedge issues. A way to say "Look how holy I am and my enemies aren't". Jesus seemed to have some words for folks like these. On this issue I don't care whether the prayer goes up or not, but I do seriously question the motives of folks on both sides here.

It's all about Political Correctness, The statue they put up to FDR was based on a photo of him, but the edited out the chain smoking FDR's cigarette holder because it "sent the wrong message".

The High School I went to was named for FDR because he lived in town,(Hyde Park NY) . A couple years ago they decided the cigarette holder that was part of the silhouette of FDR  wasn't politically correct and painted over it.No discussion, they just went and did it.It has been repainted back in a couple times by persons unknown. ;D ;D ;D

In the context of the WWII Memorial, why the (insert expletive), would FDR's prayer be objected to? This is not a "wedge issue" this is American History.

I have plenty against FDR's politics, but was not so stupid to realize his "fireside chats" kept the "home-fires burning". Our country came together against an enemy hell bent on our destruction...

Now? It's a news snip, interferes with Dancing With The Stars, and our Tweets,.....

Somehow I never saw this story on ANY MSM media outlet.....Yet I met a 82nd Airborne WWII Veteran today at of all places, the meat section at Whole Foods.

I was wearing my M1 Garand T-Shirt, and it got his attention. His Commemorative Cap, his swagger, his eyes. He asked me if it was as heavy as he remembered. I replied that rifle will never be too heavy, and how proud I am to have acquired one.

He smiled and agreed. Our 15 minute conversation was humbling to me, and leaving me wanting to talk to him more. He was part of Operation Neptune, and ended up in Anzio.  Met Gen. Patton and Ridgway outside Salermo, and asked Patton for a light.

All this within 15 minutes, all because of a damn T-Shirt!!! At Whole Foods for Pete's Sake...

He and his aluminum walker, me and my Garand T-shirt...shared a brief interaction that humbled me for his Service and sacrifice.

I thanked him, shook his hand, and wished him well. He told me to shoot straight, and watch my thumb... WWII vets are leaving us at a 1,000 a day.

and this POS in the White House is objecting to a Prayer for this Nation, and its troops in harms way, at a Memorial Built in their Honor????

It's an outrage, it's a travesty, it's Bullsh**. Who the *** does he think he is? His admin. of socialist, marxist, Soros funded Progressives are  no longer on the edge of sedition, they are engaging in it.


In law, sedition is overt conduct, such as speech and organization, that is deemed by the legal authority to tend toward insurrection against the established order.


FDR, Led this nation in a Prayer for this Nation and It's Troops. He used words like God, Blessings, and Prayer.  Now we have a sitting POTUS OBJECTING?????

This burns me up, and the DHS can take my one finger gesture towards it. This is an outrage. There is a statue of FDR in a Grovsner Square in London. Ask yourself why.... I've been there, and believe me, the old Brits know and thank GOD, America did what it did during WWII.

One of the regulars at the coffee shop I frequent is 84 years old, He spent WWII looking for U Boats from the rear seat of a US Navy Douglas  SBD  Dauntless dive bomber.
