This is the whole thing with these big magazines. When I shoot AR's at the range I generally go with 20 round P-Mags because of the length, and also the fact I never shoot more than 10 shot strings. I don't like getting my barrel and other components that hot. A 10 shot, slow fire string will still allow me to keep my hand on the barrel after without burning it.

I know this doesn't matter to a lot of guys, but running a barrel smoking hot is the fastest way to shorten it's life, and destroy it's accuracy. In that regard these 60 and 100 round magazines are self defeating. I can possibly see them in combat supporting a full auto weapon, or to "just have one". But it isn't something I'd run on my weapons everyday at the range.

The left brain agrees with you, the right can only think how kewl it would have been to have a 60 or 100 round magazine full of tracers at the night range on a brisk December evening in Germany when all the "pogs" went back to the bus after qualifying and chosing not to participate in the training.  3000 rounds, their weapons , full magazines and an order to burn up all the live ammo  ;D

Agreed.   Of course, just because you have 60 rounds loaded doesn't mean you have to shoot them all as fast as you can.

I also agree that a 60 round mag at the range would only serve to make the weapon unwieldy to no purpose since you have all the time you would need to reload.

Even in a home defense situation it could be cumbersome where a loaded 20 and 2 spares should get most any job done.

It's use would be in a SHTF situation where you were defending a stronghold, or out at the range where you are practicing defending your stronghold  ;D ;D
