This is the whole thing with these big magazines. When I shoot AR's at the range I generally go with 20 round P-Mags because of the length, and also the fact I never shoot more than 10 shot strings. I don't like getting my barrel and other components that hot. A 10 shot, slow fire string will still allow me to keep my hand on the barrel after without burning it.
I know this doesn't matter to a lot of guys, but running a barrel smoking hot is the fastest way to shorten it's life, and destroy it's accuracy. In that regard these 60 and 100 round magazines are self defeating. I can possibly see them in combat supporting a full auto weapon, or to "just have one". But it isn't something I'd run on my weapons everyday at the range.
Agreed. Of course, just because you have 60 rounds loaded doesn't mean you have to shoot them all as fast as you can.
I also agree that a 60 round mag at the range would only serve to make the weapon unwieldy to no purpose since you have all the time you would need to reload.
Even in a home defense situation it could be cumbersome where a loaded 20 and 2 spares should get most any job done.
It's use would be in a SHTF situation where you were defending a stronghold, or out at the range where you are practicing defending your stronghold
