The United States Capitol shooting incident of 1954 was an attack on March 1, 1954 by four Puerto Rican nationalists who shot 30 rounds from semi-automatic pistols from the Ladies' Gallery (a balcony for visitors) of the House of Representatives chamber in the United States Capitol.

The attackers, Lolita Lebrón, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Andres Figueroa Cordero, and Irving Flores Rodríguez, unfurled a Puerto Rican flag and began shooting at the 240 Representatives of the 83rd Congress who were on the floor during debate over an immigration bill.

Five representatives were shot in the attack. The wounded lawmakers were Alvin M. Bentley (R-Michigan), who took a bullet to the chest, Clifford Davis (D-Tennessee), who was shot in the leg, Ben F. Jensen (R-Iowa), who was shot in the back, as well as George Hyde Fallon (D-Maryland) and Kenneth A. Roberts (D-Alabama). House pages helped carry Alvin Bentley off the House floor. Future congressmen Bill Emerson and Paul E. Kanjorski were two of the congressional pages who were serving on the floor during the incident.[1]

The attackers were immediately arrested. All the attackers were given minimum sentences of 70 years in prison, after their death sentences were commuted by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.[2]

Being a real historian, I will chide you for leaving out the best part of the story, and one of the greatest Truman quotes. ;)
When Truman was later asked about the incident he said: " I was the only calm voice in the house. You see, I've been shot at by experts". Unsaid was that if the Germans couldn't do the job, he wasn't too worried about the Puerto Ricans, and PS," f..k you, ya punks!". ;D

Here you go Solus. The Ballad Of Francisco Duran (or La Corrida del Francisco Duran), another crazy latino with a Chinese rifle shooting up the White House (an SKS rather than an AK, but still close). ;D

The article is about a guy who fires 20 or 30 rounds into the White House from the street while the Pres is inside and this statement is made in the article.

"I would not characterize this as an assassination attempt at all, no way," Griffin said.

However, a source familiar with the investigation said statements from Duran indicate that he may have a grudge against Clinton. Such statements could be used by authorities to support a charge of attempted assassination of the President.


Doesn't sound like anyone is making a big deal of that event.

However the current guy fires 2 shots (well, hits with 2) from 1/2 mile away while the pres is out of town and they are making it an assassination attempt.

Actually the best quote, since at least 2 of the Cops and SS men involved had served in WWII, was when Truman stuck his head out the window in the middle of the fight and yelled "What's all that damned noise ?"

I strongly recommend the book for any one considering SD or "combat" style shooting, all but one of the effective shots were fired by one Capital cop who was dying, and one of the assassins both used a 2 handed grip that was not taught at the time .
