10mm or 41 Mag.
« on: November 22, 2011, 04:01:39 PM »
OK! i just finished another hunting show were they were hunting Hogs with a Bow and carrying a 10mm for back up. Why is there all this fascination with the 10mm.( I don't own own but I will) ;D. The 41mag has more power but if you say you carry it every one wants to know why you are not carrying a real gun, like a 44 mag. I do own a 41mag and a 44mag. I have had my S&W mdl.57 41mag for close to 35 years and it has never let me down. I know the 10mm has more rounds in it but if a Pig is charging you, you are not going to get more than six shots of before 1-you hit it, 2-It hit hits you or 3-You climb a tree. Just wondering, How about your thoughts.

As far as the most under appreciated and overpriced rounds out there, I think they are a tie. Its a revolver versus semi-auto thing. I guess it just depends on whether you want to end your day at the range cleaning a Glock or a Smith and Wesson while staring at the ammo bill and saying "Damn! I wish this thing had caught on. Why don't people understand how great it is"?  ;D :-\
FQ13 who thinks they are both cool and wishes the feebs weren't too candyassed to learn how to handle a 10mm. .40? Please, suck it up. I WANTED a Bren Ten, I just can't afford to feed it. ;)

Personally I've heard too many stories about the 10 being hard on most of the guns chambered for it. I suspect the 41 is the more versatile of the two. So my vote is for the 41 over the 10. They're both a case for loading your own.

if I understand the question correctly... seems like it comes down to autoloader vs wheelgun (provided the back up shots would be shot double action)....my background is in the practical shooting sports, but I did start with metallic handgun silhouette and hand cannons...none were shot double action, and the only big bore double acton handgun was a SW M25 (45acp) used for bowling pins...

the lighter autoloader trigger pull would be the deciding factor for me then, given that the loads would be in the same range of velocities and bullet weight....the learning curve to shoot a heavy recoiling wheel gun accurately, multiple shots double action, for me at least would be more difficult...

helped a good friend build a .460 Roland for his elk hunting trips to Colorado...and I did get to shoot a Bren 10 with Norma hot ammo way back when... I've turned into a wimp, even the occasional USPSA match I shoot with G23 with full factory loads is not fun... just my $.02...if you are going to shoot single action, and in dangerous game area... 454 Casull...  regards

If you check Ammoland or Sportsmans guide, or Midway you find 10mm running slightly more than 45ACP.
But then it's FQ
I do agree with him that it is a matter of Revolver vs Auto.
41 may be a cult classic, but there are at least 2 other more common hand gun hunting calibers for revolver, the .357 and the .44 Mag.
On the other hand, saying the 10mm "never took off" is just plain ignorant.
As the first practical hunting round for semi autos they are produced by Glock, but with the possible exception of Ruger ( for now ) Every major US manufacturer of large frame semi auto's offers a 10mm version, and then there is the EAA Witness 10, Lone wolf now offers an Upper for the Glock 20 that includes a 7.5 inch barrel and Trijicon RMR sight specifically designed for hunting.
The revolver had been around for about 100 years when the first practical hunting round for that came out  (.357 Mag 1935ish )
As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1911, we have the first practical hunting round for it.

I like them both but for hunting and woods carry I am a revolver/.41mag fan.  In my opinion a wheel gun just makes better since in the woods.

Why?  If you are attacked by a critter the chances are it will be on you or on top of you.  Shooting a semi-auto you stand a great chance of having the gun knocked out of battery if a critter is on top of you.  With a wheel gun you can stick the barrel through the rib cage and empty it  ;D

Granted as we all know the chance of you being attacked by an animal is not that great, however if you are why chance it?

Both are outstanding cartridges that deserve to be much more popular than they are, IMHO.

I don't have a 10 mm, but I believe the 10mm uses same diameter bullet as a .40 cal? If that's the case and you reload, there's an advantage there rather than going into the .41 perhaps.

The .40 S&W is a 10mm with a lighter load because the FBI found some of their agents had a hard time managing the recoil of a real 10mm.
The .41 on the other hand can be loaded as light as safety allows since it is a revolver round and the pressure does not effect cycling.

(Experienced reloaders will know that if you go to light on a load you begin to get the same symptoms as going to heavy, the reason is that the light load does not start the bullet moving in time to prevent the pressure from "backing up" )
