Need advice.
« on: November 27, 2011, 01:09:11 AM »
I used to live in Montana where we had lots of bears and cats. I have since moved to Az where that is much less of a problem. I have a stainless Taurus tracker 44 mag that I never shoot. I am thinking of selling and reallocating  a glock 19 or 23. Something that I would shoot more and would have more function. I want a ccw gun that has a bit more capacity than what I currently carry. I have read some of Rob Pincus's latest coins of wisdom in which he makes a compelling argument for the 9mm. I currently do not own a 9mm and think i should get one.
Any thoughts guys?

MB carries a 9mm in one of several guises and says he doesn't feel undergunned!  If I pick up a 9 I will carry Corbon DPX.  I prefer the Gen 1 Glock in any cal. because of the finger grooves in the later gens.  The 26 might be a viable option for you, especially CCW.  I tried the 26, M&P sub and the SA XD sub and the XD was better FOR ME!  I might go that way or maybe a Ruger SC9.

PS:  Nothing wrong with the .40 S&W either in MHOFWIWWAS!

G 26 and 27 are not gonna be viable options for me. I had a 27 and got rid of it because it was too small for my hand. I am leaning heavily towards a g 19

I love my XDs, I've got a Taurus Millium Pro but should have held out for the Taurus 709.

I keep telling myself that with modern ammo the 9mm is a perfectly acceptable round for social work.  But I keep carrying my .45acp.   ;D

Now if you are talking about four legged critters, I would not carry a 9mm if I thought I'd run into anything bigger than a coyote.

Oh, and the grip angle on a Glock is wrong for me so I can't help you there.

I have three 3rd gen Glocks (19, 26, and 20) and love them.  If the grip angle and size works for you, I say get the 19.  I actually like the finger grooves, but I don't have really big hands.  For ccw, the 19 is almost as concealable as the 26 and feels a lot better in the hand to me.  I carry the 26 more because it does provide a little more concealment, and I carry around people who may call me out if the spot it.  With good hollowpoints, I don't feel undergunned at all.

I have never shot a 23, but it's the same size as the 19 and should feel and conceal the same.  I can't afford to feed too many calibers and like the interchangeability between my two primaries (the 26 and 19).  Therefore, I wouldn't rule out the 23 if you already have a couple of .40 caliber guns and don't want to start stocking up on another caliber.

Since you are looking for a CCW/plinker I think 9MM is fine bearing in mind what Ichiban posted.
As I have often posted, the only valid complaints I have heard about the Glock is that some don't like the grip, and unless you shot your revolver Double action a lot you may not care for the trigger, but that is not confined to Glocks. All DA pistols have a longer trigger pull than SA shooters may be used to.
Handle a few other brands, shoot some if you can, if the Glock is comfortable to you it's a good choice.
It's not a 1911, but after 25 years it's safe to say it is a proven design.

I HATE GLOCKS.... But I do carry them at times, a #36 with a spring clip and a #26 with a spring clip.
I love the 1911,,, but alas, there very hard to carry for ccw.....
I find myself carrying my "discovery Card"  (a kel-tec P3AT)  "I don't leave home without it")

Funny..... Did you know in Fla when you ware cargo shorts, you can put a glock 26 with a 33 round mag in the front pocket and no one will notice it?
I forgot to compensate for the natural rotation of the earth.

A mouse gun in your pocket has better stopping power than a 1911 left in the vehicle or safe   ;D

What is your beef about Glocks ?
Since you are willing to carry one, and cast your own bullets I'm thinking it has to do with "injection molded" rather than "steel and wood craftsmanship".
Which I will admit gives me some issues as well.
On the other hand, perspective matters.
A S&W revolver, or a 1911 are finely crafted shooting tools, a Glock is just a reliable blaster.

I have several hand guns that I often carry. My daily carry is a ruger lcr with critical defense +p (super comfy). Also carry an lcp at times as well.  I feel undergunned with these two. My daily carry used to be a kimber ultra but since moving to az it is much more cumbersome since I dress different. I own a full size springfield operator 1911, but thats too hard to conceal. For home defense I have a Glock 22 by the bed. (Easy for the Mrs to use) I do have carry options, and every gun I have seems to fit into the puzzle somewhere. The 44 just doesn't fit anymore since grizzly bears are no longer an issue.
