The desired affect was to ventilate the POS in front of him and his wife threatening both with a machete.

This is a major pet peeve. If you bring your gun into the fight intend to use it until such the attacker does something to change your mind.
The quote is "nobody likes to leaks" not "guns make criminals run away.". It isn't a magical talisman.

Huh?
The desired effect is to stop the threat.
If you can stop the threat without firing a shot, you just saved yourself a sh!tload of lawyer money and legal headache.

Be prepared to? Damn right!  Fire for effect? Only if the bad guy makes it necessary.
Unfired guns make criminals flee thousands of times a year. To think that you HAVE to shoot EVERY threat is foolish.
You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.

If I see the BG drawing a gun on me, it's past the time for warning gestures.

I never said anything about shooting every threat, nor did I say anything about displaying a gun to every threat, but if yo pull your firearm you should intend to fire it.  It is not a threat.  If he quits, turns and runs, drops to his knees or in someway shows me that he is no longer a threat GREAT!  But he better do it quick as he has about 1.7 seconds if I am wearing a tucked in shirt and less if I don't.

If I am not in fear for my life then he will never fear for his.

We do not get to pick when the balloon goes up, only how well prepared we are to deal with it.

I understand what you are saying, addressing the mindset that if it's bad enough to draw you need to be prepared to shoot unless the situation changes.
But that was not how your first post came across.

Warning shots should be center mass.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Letter to Alexander Hamilton, Friday, May 02, 1783

Sometimes all it takes is stopping and asking a question. MB related a tale of the few times he has had to draw on someone, in this case an intruder at the door, and MB said he pointed a small caliber weapon at the BG. The guy stopped his progress through the door, his eyes got real big, and he asked "What do I have to do to not die?"
"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do this to others and I require the same from them"

Correct.  They will serve as a great warning for his accomplice.
