Question @ traveling with two guns.....
« on: December 03, 2011, 11:54:37 AM »
I usually keep a 9mm pistol in a gun safe in my truck. I don't have my CHL yet (haven't had time to take the class & can't carry d/t my job....but I plan to get it ASAP). When I travel overnight, I usually pack a pistol in my luggage to keep in the hotel (plus I like having a spare handy). The type of gun I pack varies a lot, but I'm looking to settle for one as my permanent "travel gun". This is where the question comes in.....should I get one in 9mm so that I can use the same ammo in both pistols, or should I pack one in a different caliber (.22lr, .38/.357, .45ACP) so that, in the event of emergency, I have more flexibility in finding ammo?.....

Thanks in advance....

The 1st choice is two guns that can share magazines. The 2nd choice is two guns that can share bullets. Choice 3 is two guns of the same style.

All I can add to that is that you can find 9mm almost anywhere in the world.

What NCB said.

I have a baby Glock for CCW. The 13 rnd G23 mags are my reload.

Be careful where you do that, some places like Ma. NYC, and Chicago do not recognize the Federal safe transit (Mclure / Volkmer ) law.

MA does Tom but I'd be careful in Boston or at Logan.  It needs to be in the locked trunk or secured with a locking device and no ammunition can reside with the firearm.  No loitering is recommended.

Also, no search of the vehicle can be done without probable cause, you're not required to say bupkiss to the Deputy Dogs...

In 29 years, I've been stopped once in MA and CT and never in NH, VT, ME, or RI.

Fortunately, most of my traveling is inside Texas with a few forays to neighboring states (& a trip to TN in the future)....

Never thought I'd see the day when you agreed with a union, in this case the Teamsters. Good on you, keep it up! ;D
As to the OP, well I like the interchangibility of ammo thing, its why I wound up with two (at one time three) glocks in 9mm. Different sizes, same ammo and mag interchangeability. However, I'm rethinking that. I got a .357 barrel for my Bond rather than a 9mm as I figured it would be better for such a short barrel. The G26 is my main carry, but fur a BUG? Well, I think a J frame or a derringer in either .38 or .357 is hard to beat, or for that matter a mousegun in .380 or .32. I don't like or really trust either, but they both pass the "better than nothing' test with flying colors. And the main thing is that they  fill a different niche in that they are smaller than the nine and let you carry where you couldn't before. Just my. 02.
