Gifting guns across state lines ??
« on: December 10, 2011, 07:43:10 PM »
If I gift an AK 47 to my son (who is not prohibited from firearm ownership)  How do I gift it from Louisiana to Mississippi?  Any help?  Reading the laws at the ATF web site is like looking at a chinese fire drill.
Give me liberty or I'll get my guns and get it myself.

Outside of handing it over in person, I'd recommend shipping through a FFL.  Your son will need to do a 4473 on his end.  You can find FFLs in the area that will do the transfer for a very reasonable price.  I'm sure that there are other ways to do it but I think this would be the most secure.

What if I hand deliver it to him? I plan to visit him for CHRISTmas?

Gifting is no different than a private sale.  With a parent to child gift the only concern I would have is that the gun can be legally owned in the state where it is headed (provided that the child can legally own and have guns).

I have donated handguns to our local Friends of the NRA committee.  The guns have been awarded at the events, and our local FFL has told me that there is no restriction on my part.  He recommended that I get the name and address of the recipient, so I copy down their information from their driver's license.  I toss that in the gun safe along with a dated note stating "I no longer shoot gun X, serial number XYZ, enough to keep, so I donated it to this event, and this who received it."

And all I got was this lousy rock. ;D Its been covered. Either hand it to him or ship it to an FFL and you are good.
