S&W M&P VTAC
« on: December 12, 2011, 04:22:06 PM »
Does anyone have a VTAC?  I am a big M&P handgun fan and the first time that I laid eyes on the VTAC I was in LUST. haha  I was unable to find it for anything less than $800 in 9 or 40!  I gave up and built another AR. ha  I am just curious if I should try and buy one or build my own.  If anyone has experience with one I am curious why the APEX tactical kits say you cannot use the RAM with the VTAC.  It says "PRODUCT WILL NOT WORK IN VTAC VARIANT DUE TO CHANGE IN SEAR HOUSING BLOCK CONFIGURATION"

Any ideas on the difference?

And last.  What about the new VTAC sights?  Do you like yes or no and why?

Thank you in advance for any input!

A little google foo, showed a color change and a Viking Tactical Fiber Optic Night Sight Package, a slight trigger job, a slight change to the finish, and ....other than a standard full size .40 (which I own and love), I see no other reason than to keep the M&P line current, and offer a slightly tweaked model. (Not a fan of the color, but alas,....)

Who is in charge of marketing at S&W?

It was at the NRA show, but not offered at the S&W site....Hmmmmm.....

Yea, I have read a couple of articles that featured it so I am familiar with the changes you listed.  I have hear good and bad on the VTAC sights.  Some really like them.  Others have complained that they are too "busy"  having multiple dots.  The thing that I am looking into is what is the difference in the sear blocks as stated by Apex Tactical.

Viking Tactical was offering the VTAC version.  S&W now does feature it on their website.  They are really hard to find.  Back when I was going to purchase one (before I built another AR)  I was on the notify list with Gallery of Guns.  It was about 4 months from the time that I put my name on the list to be notified when one was available to the time that I received a notice. And even then the price was astronomical!

I will still purchase one in the future to add to the collection but it will only be once the price has come down and/or I find one used.

I would be half tempted to to put tritium or another brand of sights on mine, an APEX trigger, or even an S&W Performance Center set of "tweaks", before buying a marketing hype VTAC.

Just like the AR you built, and the one I built as well,....sometimes, getting a reasonably priced base model, and adding this or that, still puts one ahead, of a promo version...

Just my .02 cents, but I really do think the M&P line is top notch. If a fancy VTAC label, and a higher price isn't worth it for what I can do myself, than I'll leave it for those with more money.

Plus the colors aren't my cup of tea.... ::)

I'm a Glock guy, but I do like the way the M@P's shoot. I don't love the trigger, but the accuracy is very good. But, I notice you haven't really spelled out (probably because they haven't) what makes it better than the standard model. For $800, let's call it $600 when the dust settles, you could buy a laser, new sights and a bunch of mags for your current gun. Just a thought.

The big difference is the Viking Tac. sights.  They are tritium/fiber optic.  but they are all separate in such a way that the fiber optic tubes are on the top and then just below are the tritium viles are, instead of having the tritium at the far end of the fiber optic tube where you see the glow of the tritium through the same aperture as the fiber optic.  This is supposed to be better according to them.  This is why I started the thread to look for more opinions.

As far as the M&P trigger:   GET THE APEX TAC. forward set sear kit with the RAM.   Unbelievable the difference.  This system along with the competition spring kit is absolutely one of the best triggers that I have ever shot and I do have a good field to base this off of.  Some say it makes it like a  1911. I can see that but you still know that you are firing a striker fired weapon.
