9mm TCM

Got a new gun in yesterday, a Rock Island/Armcorp double stack 1911 in 9mm with a extra barrel for some new round called the 9mmTCM.  A 9mm necked down to .22 cal.  All these new rounds usually just don't go nowhere, with the exception of the .40 when it was brought out, and the .17HMR, the only two I can think of that has really took off.  The .204 Ruger to a far lesser degree.  I would say that a .22 cal bullet from a 9mm case would be a zippy little round!  Probably like a 5.7.  Time will tell.

I think that this one falls under the "Why" category. A super zippy .22 makes a certain amount of sense in a rifle. In a 1911 configuration? Why? The 5.7 was a specialty round to deal with body armor and provide low recoil and high capacity. Even here, the pistol was an after thought to go with the P90. I'm not sure the world needs another version. The standard 9mm barrel as an add on makes a certain amount of sense except for two problems. One, the 9mm is going to be exponentially cheaper to shoot, and its what you'd probably choose for SD anyway, so why bother? Just sayin'.

I have to agree with FQ on this.
It is probably pure death on squirrels and other small varmints in the same gun you carry for SD, but with all the .22 conversions available that is not an issue.
I don't see this round ever being more than a curiosity. Hang on to that barrel though as it may add to the eventual resale value of your pistol.
As to "Why ?" that I can answer.
One or more people interested in "Wildcat" cartridges were sitting around, (Possible involvement of adult beverages)
Discussing how to neck down a 20 MM casing to .17 cal when some one observed, "there is to much excess material at the neck, but I bet we could get a 9mm case to take a .22"  He then went over to his work bench and said, "Hold my beer and watch this"

With a solid bullet it should have a ridiculous amount of penetration and hollowpoints would surely expand without any problem. The energy of a fairly hot .45 with 1/4 of the recoil should make it fun to shoot and effective too. What's the down side?

None of us have said it's a bad round, just that it will be a commercial flop.

I remember it was introduced, but they had some sort of problem with the performance and it was recalled and not to my knowledge ever returned to the market.
