safely shooting out vehicle glass for rescue
« on: January 02, 2012, 05:17:34 AM »
Just read an article with headlines " Passer-by shoots out window to help rescue children from icy river crash". What is the correct technique to safely do this?

Read the story too.  Thought the story was a good one for starting the New Year - passersby work together to save kids trapped in car overturned in a river.

Here is the link, but it doesn't answer duhar's question.

If the window is submerged so far that you can not break it with a blow (tempered glass breaks very easy when struck with a sharp edged or pointed object - gun muzzle or grip), place muzzle as close to glass as possible, angle gun to direct the bullet away from occupants and fire.

We used to teach placing a center punch on the engraved information that is located in the bottom corner of the glass.  Not that this is a weak spot, but it gave rescuers a "target" to go for.  We found that if we told them to just strike or use the punch on the glass there was indecision, but if we taught to attack the label everyone would act quickly.

I saw divers break the glass with the butt of their knives, so I believe that if a person grasped their gun by the barrel or slide and struck with the muzzle the glass would shatter.  I would try this before firing a bullet through glass into an occupied compartment.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

The idea scares me.
Yes, it worked, but I would leave it as an absolute last resort.

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/01/daniel-zimmerman/chris-wilden-saves-three-kids-with-his-gun/#more-91753

snip,,,

Willden, a former cop, pressed his gun against the submerged glass and blew out the windows. He used a pocket knife to cut away seat belts. And that allowed him, with the help of others who had stopped, to turn the car right side up and yank the three kids to safety.
But only one of them was breathing.

He said the other two children were lifeless, the boy upside down in his car seat and the second girl floating in the front passenger compartment. Both were pulled from the vehicle.

Buzzy Mullahkel, of North Logan, told the Deseret News of Salt Lake City that the boy wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse, but was revived when another passer-by performed CPR.

“Emotions started taking over when he started to breathe. Everybody started to cheer. Lots of tears and clapping,” said Mullahkel, a father of a 4-year-old.

Fortunately, it looks like all three children will recover.

Something you’ll never hear from MAIG, the VPC or the Bradys is that guns are tools. Tools for having fun at the range, putting some meat on the table, defending your home or protecting yourself and your family. Just like a hammer or a knife, the decision of when and how to use them is up to you. Unless you live in certain cities and states, of course.

Chris Willden happened to have his tools with him when that car went into the drink. We’re sure Roger Anderson’s mighty glad he did. And three kids in Utah are alive because of it. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I wonder if this will make the MSM.....

They do,....I was, of course referring to CNN, MSNBC, and the other "alphabet" news media that tow the line for the Liberal/Anti-Gun agenda.
