A third-generation Marine arrested in New York City after trying to check his Indiana-registered handgun with security made an "honest mistake" and should not face prison time, his attorney said Monday.

Ryan Jerome, a 28-year-old former private first class whose father and grandfather were Marines, faces three and half years in prison after being arrested Sept. 27 for carrying a .45-caliber Ruger that was legally registered in his home state.

Here we go, another putz who should have known the gun was illegal in NYC and should be let off. Maybe it was "an honest mistake" but part of the responsibility of owning and carrying a gun is knowing when and where it is legal to do so.

Whether or not the NYC laws are good, bad, or indifferent they exist. Obey them or suffer the penalties.

This is the reason I have licenses to neighboring states.  I can be in six states in as little as six or seven hours on a given day!

Know what you're up against, ignorance of the law is no defense!

Even if NY State honors your permit it may not be valid in NYC.
Ask Majer, NYC does not honor his NY CCW.

New York doesn't honor any other states.  I left it locked in the trunk while I raced across the state and I will never visit NYC again as long as I live anyway!  I've been there twice, once for the 1964 Worlds Fair and the last time about twenty years ago to fix a piece of equipment in a Brooklyn Firehouse!

Yup,It's true,My upstate permit in not valid in the 5 boroughs...BUT, the nycity permit is good upstate.

Yeah, that worked out real well for the Blacks in the Deep South in the 40's and 50's, right? Got all them rights recognized and allowed just by obeying the ILLEGAL laws.

NY should be sued into poverty and Bloomberg should be doing a perp walk into Attica.

The problem is you can not even fly into New York, have a lay over where you need to retrieve your baggage, then board again, and still be legal.  Hell you can't even drive through the state with a handgun locked in the trunk and be legal.  Heaven forbid you drive through with an evil "assault" weapon that has a collapsible stock and a flash suppressor.  We need a court case to fix this, and so far no one is stepping up.

That isn't exactly true.
You are legal under Federal law but NY refuses to to honor it, but if you are in the country illegally they will provide you with a drivers license, also in contempt of federal law, and no one does a thing about it.

Path, did you read the first part of the sentence you highlighted? Does it sound like I agree with the NYC laws? You seem to imply that if someone doesn't agree with a law he/she has the right to ignore that law. That's like saying I don't agree with the speed limit on your highway so I'll just ignore that restriction and drive whatever speed I wish. That will and does lead to anarchy.
