The US Army is the only branch that follows this unnecessary protocol. Air Force, Navy and Marine rescue choppers have dispensed with the Red Cross and come armed to the teeth, usually with multiple miniguns.
So why is the Army so bass-ackwards???
If the other units are already doing it the proper way, why allow your (our) people to die?? 
I think the answer is that the term you should have used was Brass-ackwards
