Yup! And that's to all you said.

IMHO, the shrinks have expanded the definitions - and created new or highlighted obscure conditions - simply to generate more work for themselves. And/or profits for their drug company suppliers. Seen the ads for autism wherein they claim that almost 1% of kids are considered autistic?

Let's see, a shrink outfit creating a vague, expanded definition of a "condition" that requires a shrink to treat? Naw, no conflict of interest there!  ::)

What a bunch of crap!  There's a whole lot of "may" statements in there, and it says 1 to 16% "suffer" from this?  That's a big range.  Children are going to push their boundaries starting at the age of 2.  It's up to the parent to push back.  Period.  My post has nothing to do with anyone in this forum, but my own personal experiences and observations.

I've seen so many parents that want to be their kids' friends instead of their parents that when the time comes to discipline them it's already too late.  The kids have lost all respect for their "friends" and they know exactly how to manipulate them into getting what they want.  Children can be devious little bastards, given the right training.  These "parents" are often the very same ones who buy alcohol for their teenage children and party with them.  I was actually told by another parent once "They're going to do it anyway."

Biggest pet peeve I have about people like that is they tend to give out parenting advice and they always say "pick your battles", which is code for I'll let them get away with it this time because I don't want them to be mad at me, but next time I'll say something for sure.  This is a sure fire way to ruin a young person's life.  But sure enough, in the article, one of the ways of dealing with a petulant child is to (say it with me) "Pick your battles."

I speak from personal experience, as a member of my wife's family "picked her battles" and now has a thirty-plus year old spoiled brat of a daughter (with her own child) who she still refuses to discipline (even though she's ruining her life) because she's afraid the daughter will run away.  I could go on for hours about that situation.

Sorry for rant.  What were we talking about, anyway?   ;)

I had an "educator" suggest that I put my daughter on Ritalin in the second grade!  She was having some trouble with her school work like that's a big deal!  The kid attended 5 different kindergartens her first year of school because of the fact we'd move back east from MI in 91.  She was probably just wondering when we were going to move again...

Anyway, the educator got educated by my wife and I and that no such thing was going to happen and if they tried to over rule us, they were looking at a court battle.  The principle got involved, the superintendent got involved and I took them all to task on the issue and won!

Today, that kid is a 27 year old Banking Professional and taking classes to get her degree!

She's a bit of a smartass though!  I don't know where she gets that from..

I posted in another thread that this happened to my son last summer after graduation.  I took him down to Great Falls, MT to the Army recruiter, he wants to be a Ranger, and had everything good to go except the MEPS medic's approval.  He took a test at 15 that put him in the ODD classification but was never treated for it (he was on meds for ADD but took himself off so he could join the Army).  He was denied and gave up joining the Army to work construction.  Now his construction job is drawing to a close and he's wishing he had that slot for Basic on January 26th.

The good news is he got a call from the Marine Corps (not Corpse BHO) on Friday and is considering joining the Corps.  He needs the structure and exposure to the world IMHO.

My son graduated Boot last August from MCRD San Diego. He was 26 at the time. It is an awesome experience, and the change in him was incredible. Have yoour boy talk with the recruiter about his desired MOS and get the approval before he goes.

All he wants to do is "blow sh!t up, kick doors in and shoot bad guys" along those lines.  He's a smart kid, just doesn't know anything other than what interests him.  As far as contracts go, I was the 4th generation in my family to serve, my dad made it 21 years in the Army Reserve and I missed out on my desired MOS (Combat Diver-you couldn't enlist for it when I went in you had to transfer in service).  So that was why he wanted me there when he went and talked to the recruiter back in May '11.  I'll give him my counsel as much as I can and I know he'll get some advice from my family up there in Montana as well (that would be my mom trying to convince him to do something safe-LOL!).
