Empty Holster Protest Called For Across Georgia

Gun rights advocates think a ban on firearms on Georgia college campuses is wrong. They're planning a statewide protest.
They hope their "empty holster protest" will show the Board of Regents how many people think gun carry rights should extend to college campuses.
The Libertarian Party of Georgia is joining with other groups for the empty holster protest. They are asking people to wear empty holsters like this both on college campuses and off.
The Libertarian Party thinks that the ban of firearms on University System of Georgia campuses violates the second amendment rights of students, employees, and on campus visitors. So they are organizing the empty holster protest to increase awareness.
Libertarian of Georgia Southwest Georgia Chairman Tom Knighton said "We're asking everybody who supports the second amendment to wear an empty holster. Particularly on campus. But also just around town throughout the state."
Recent assaults and robberies of Georgia Tech and Georgia State students have Libertarians questioning the college campus gun ban, saying criminals know it's a place where potential victims are unarmed.
Knighton said "By definition they are criminals. They don't follow the rules. All these Board of Regents regulations do is disarm the law abiding."
But Police at both Albany State University and Darton College disagree, and say the gun ban makes the campus safer overall.
Albany State University Police Major Cadedria Hill said "Anytime you have weapons in a public place, then there is potential for violence. A potential for adverse situations."
College police say in the case of a violent crime on campus, they don't think people with permitted guns will make it safer.
Darton College Police Chief James Brackin said "Police respond. All they are going to see is somebody with a weapon. They are not going to know if that's a good guy or a bad guy. And they are going to take action to stop that person."
