Protection in the woods - Best Bear Gun

On Bud's Gun Shop Forums the question came up: What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself?

A 22 short should do it....think not...read on........

The best answer:           My personal favorite defense gun has always been a Beretta Jetfire in 22 short. Over all the years I've been hiking I never leave without it in my pocket. Of course we all know too the first rule when hiking in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System." For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this it means you NEVER hike alone. You bring a friend or companion, even an in-law, that way if something happens there is someone to go get help.   I remember one time hiking with my brother-in-law in northern Alberta. Out of nowhere came this huge brown bear and man was she mad. We must have been near one of her cubs.  Anyway, if I had not had my little Jetfire I'd sure not be here today.  Just one shot to my brother-in-law's knee cap and I was able to escape by just walking at a brisk pace.

Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun,  July 26, 1920.

That's Badgersmilk's bear gun.  ;)
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. When I was a kid, my daddy wouldalways carry a hatchet when we got off in the woods.. I asked him why he carried it and he said if we see a bear, he'd give it to the bear so it would have something to play with while we got away.. I guess he didn't own a gun...
With friends like these, who needs hallucinations!..

That's my plan.  Years ago I could use running shoes and leave tt as bear bait.  However, as I have "grown in stature" I have found I can't out run anyone, so I went to kneecapping the old dude a couple years ago.

Haven't you noticed that he now uses a cane  ;D  I'm not sure if that was from our last walk and he hasn't healed, or if he has plans for me on our next excursion  ::)
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.
