Mayor Bloomberg slammed Congress Sunday for not providing federal funding to keep guns out of the wrong hands.

Touting a new Super Bowl ad against illegal guns, the mayor said states don’t get enough money to perform proper background checks on gun applicants.

“Federal laws say you can't get a gun if you have a drug problem, psychiatric problem, criminal record or [are a\] minor, and yet Congress doesn't give monies to make sure that we can have a background check,” Bloomberg said on “Meet the Press.”

Criminals seeking guns can take advantage of “too many loopholes,” the mayor said.

“The background database isn't up to date, private sector sales of guns is something like 40%, and they don't do background checks,” he said.

Even with the city’s tough gun laws, a Brooklyn thug with prior arrests allegedly obtained a pistol and shot cop Kevin Brennan in the head last week, he said.

“New York is now so much lower than almost every big city, we still had a cop shot last week with a gun that somebody had, even though the federal laws prohibited that person from having a gun,” the mayor said, referring to accused gunman Luis “Baby” Ortiz.

Bloomberg filmed the Super Bowl ad with his Boston counterpart, Mayor Thomas Menino. In the 30-second clip, the pair, decked out in their respective football team’s gear, debate whose city is better but agree on tougher gun laws.

Allegedly the spot is only to run in DC - ya know, to influence the Beltway mopes.

Moodanna was bad enough the Bloomberg/menino ad was an east coast thing thank goodness.
“As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people.  On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron.”  H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun,  July 26, 1920.

None of it makes sense. Last I heard a 30 second spot for a Super Bowl ad ran in the neighborhood of $3.5 MILLION. If they're complaining about not having enough money to run background checks, where did they get the $3.5 MILLION to run the ad in the first place? Isn't NYC supposed to be in the economic $h!tter?

What is he talking about no money for background checks  ???

There is a federal system in place, and the FFL calls it to transfer the guns.  Federal money and private business dollars!  Get a clue Sara!!!

In the ad, Nanny whines about the feds passing the background check law and then not providing any money to the states to support it. It's nonsense, but the sheeple and kongress kritters won't understand that part.

My first thought when I heard that was - it's a freakin' phone call! The state has to do nothing other than maybe ship information to the feds.

Mumble Menino is full of shyte!  He knows full well that each and every license issued in MA donates 50 bucks to the Firearms Records Bureau in Chelsea, MA!  The states background checks are well and fully funded by the people that choose to succumb to the state system!

He's just pissed that too many of HIS voting block are killing each other in Boston, Southie, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, etc...

They don't even have to ship the info in.  Just by entering it in the computers gives the feds access  >:(  The background check added nothing in terms of work or expense to anyone except the feds, and they are covering it.  They are pulling a Sara Brady dog and pony show that is mostly smoke and mirrors  >:(

Remember - It is an election year, which means that the brown stinking chunks will float to the surface.
