Mothers - The best and the worst.

I came across two stories about mothers today.....

One, the best.   A mother huddled in the basement during the recent tornado with her to small children covered them with her body as the house collapsed on top of them.  She lost parts of both legs but the kids got not a scratch.

The other - the worst.  a Florida mother is arrested for selling sex with her 6 year old daughter for drug money.

As for the second mother, "I can't think of an adjective that's bad enough..." I agree. That's sick.

Every time I figure society has descended to the lowest level possible, I hear about some scum like this discovering entirely new levels of heinous sin.  Yes, sin.  Absolute, mortal, evil sin.

See this type of stuff as a Police Officer the best and worst of people. Some times when I get home from work I sit at the end of the bed and wonder what goes through some of these peoples heads. Sit across from a small child and have them tell you what happened. Then sit across from the devil and try to get a confession. Sit in the court room and have Defense attorney tear you to pieces. Sit at your dinner table and have your wife ask you what you did today. Nothing honey.
  Knock on a door at one in the morning and tell someone that their kid was killed in a drunk driving accident. Walk into a house that the walls and floor are moving (roaches). Go to a fatality accident when you have to pick up pieces and put them in bags while the EMTs and Firemen are vomiting behind their vehicles.
   Roll up on a minor call (you get them all the time) and get confronted by a man wielding a weapon and talking gibberish. You pray that someone anyone will get there to back you up and then the fight for your life begins. Tell someone you found thier kid and you need to come down and ID them. Hold someones hand and lie to them and tell them that they are going to be allright, and you know it is not going be. Know what the smell of rotting or burnt flesh smells like, and it brings to mind the last time you smelled it.

Its people like you that make it possible for people like me and mine to live our lives and I thank you.  Thank you for your service and for your sacrifice.

My dad was a sherriff in Northern Idaho for a few years and quit for the very reasons your stated above.  At the moment my wife has a good friend from High School that is just beginning to resume a some what normal life after a "good" shoot sent him into a dark place.  Take care of yourself-body, mind & soul while you can and let me know if I can do anything for you (I'm a helluva machinist  )

Had a friend in HS who was one of the most "happy go lucky" guys I've known.  Always had a smile and would clown a bit for laughs...Never the "class clown", but alwyas seemd happy and good to be around.

He became a police officer in the local department and was a detective when I ran into him again at our 20th HS Reunion.

Nothing like the guy I knew back them...at least nothing that showed.  He was terse, sat along and had no interest in recalling old times.  I used the word "bitter" to describe him to others who knew him back then but it wasn't quite the right word.  A lot of disillusionment, disappointment and maybe hopelessness in there. 

My guess was that what he saw in his job left no room for carefree thoughts. 

Your post confirms my guess and supplies the detail I have not experienced.

In thinking about my own post and the actions of Mom #1, I came to the realization that she was  not really a hero.

I mean, she did not add much, if any, risk to herself by her actions...she was gonna be down there when the house came down anyway.

But what she did do was have what it took to do what she could to protect her children.  Doing so did put her at greater risk I guess...she could have used them as shields...

But I guess what I am getting at is that she did what should be "expected" of someone, especially a mother, but of anyone, of everyone.

All of us, in a similar situation, should find in ourselves to protect children and those who need that protection.

So, while it sure seems like something very special, it should not be.  Instead it should be the default action, the normal response of any decent human being.

That is appears outstanding is the concern...
