From another thread, there is this AR that is pretty modular, to including the mag well.

For a first AR, this might be something to thing about as it can be configured for many different calibers other than what would fit into a .223 mag well.

Also, if money allows, get a .300 Blackout upper, and a small reserve of ammo. (It's mo' pricey but a good stash for the bigger zombies)...

Less than $400. No ,mag change, no bolt change, no nothing change EXCEPT the barrel. But the famous 5.56 poodle shooter, gets a ballistic upgrade in the .300 Blackout. For that extra "punch" when needed.
