New To AR's
« on: March 07, 2012, 04:08:51 PM »
OK! I am looking to buy my first AR. The one I am looking at the hardest is the Stag Arms model 3, not the new three gun model just the standard. The one thing I like about it is the new hand guard. I like the rail covers, if you don’t use the rails you can  hide them. I’m also looking at the Model 8 piston gun. For just a few hundred dollars more I could do with less cleaning. I think the pricing on both guns is great but you know what they say, "You get what you pay for." If some one out there has one or the other, a little help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Monty,

In a Shooting Gallery episode a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, MB found himself without an AR and had a Stag shipped to him at the last moment. On camera, without cleaning, without sighting in, without lubing, without anything other than loading the magazine, it ran flawlessly.

I have a Stag upper in 6.8Rem SPC. No problems there either, other than the cost of ammo!

You will not go wrong with the Stag. You can pay less and get an OK gun, but the Stag will not cause you problems. If - God forbid - it did give you problems, Stag will fix it.

+1 to Path's post. M&P AR receivers are Stag. They have been one of the bedrock AR manufacturers for a long time. The rest as far as stock, handguards, optics, BUIS, with an AR is just the icing to personal preference.

But with a Stag name on the important bits,...it will work just fine for you.

In addition, if something uber cool comes along for an AR platform that you must have, you can always add the "tweaks".....

I have one of the earlier S&W M&P 15Ts that is supposed to be a Stag manufacture. I heard S&W does everything in-house now, don't know for sure.
It is flawless.   (except for the big freaking scratch I put on the side ::))

I can't give you 1st hand info on Stag, but I can't resist putting my 1.5 cents worth in.

Have you checked out "GunBlast.com" or just Googled for reviews?

The piston vs direct impingement debate will rage probably as long as the 9mm vs 45.  My sage words of wisdom are, both have the advantages and both have their problems.   JB Stoner had his reasons for chosing DI, as did other designers have for their piston designs.   Don't get too hung up on either.   If you're only going to shoot 100 rounds a year then not a big deal either way, I believe.

Do not forget pictures, like really good close ups and profiles......Buxom Stag pics work real good here...... 8)

It's still an AR, want a match grade trigger, couple of small punches and you'll have one, want a different stock, takes about two minutes with a coffee break in between.  I like the flat-top as optics, and BUIS kinda flow, you can always add a removable handguard if that's your cup of tea, but the AR and all the options are like Barbie for guys... ::)

Get mags, get more mags, find a deal on mags. Split 1000rds. with someone you know with an AR, than scour online dealers, and local folks for more. Target shoot with .223,....keep the 5.56 in reserve....

Did I mention getting a few PMags?

Shameless plug for my Frankenstein........ ;)

Go get it!!!!

SPLIT 1000rds?   Sorry, I'm a greedy republican.   I keep all my ammo for myself.

I started buying Mag's a year ago. I thought it was time to get an AR to go with them. ;)

Okay, I thought I'd stick my foot in here.  (I put this in the wrong thread this morning)

Here's my two ARs.

One is a stock A2 from the old Eagle Arms.  I keep it hoping to shoot NRA one day with it.

The other is a C3 lower, J&S parts kit, DPMS trigger, Galati upper with ER Shaw barrel, Hogue aluminum float tube and Leupold 4-12x  scope.   Plans are to get a Timney trigger.
