Remington 700s

 I have two custom built 700s with heavy Shilen barrels that do not serve my needs. Both are 7mm wildcat calibers, the 7mm/8mm is a 8mm case necked down to hold a 7mm, bullet and the 7mm-06 is the 30-06 necked down to 7mm. My idea is to replace one with a .308 barrel which should be pretty strait forward and I would like the other in .300 blackout. Does the whole 8mm bolt need to be replaced or just the extractor, is that receiver too large for such a small case? Have I overlooked a great 7mm cartridge that is more common then these wildcats?

A friend has good results on targets out to 600 yards with a standard 7mm-08 (.308 Win necked to 7mm). My son had one last year that he traded, and now wishes he had it back because he liked it better than the .270 he traded for.

I can't tell you about the bolt/extractor replacement, but I can tell you from experience that a shorter-than-action cartridge can and will work in a long-action bolt gun. I have a family friend that converted (by simple barrel change kit) a Savage .30-06 LA to a .308 Win SA and has had no problems.  I think it would be mainly depend on cartridge case diameter than length as it relates to how they sit in the mag-well.

I have questions about the 300 Blackout.  There are a few guys up here that are gaga over it.  None of them have one, and all their information comes from gun magazines.  They haven't shot one or even seen one.  I was with a guy this weekend as he bought brass to start reloading for a gun he doesn't own or a package he has never shot.

When I ask what is so good about the package they all have about the same reasoning (this is a direct quote of two phrases from one of them, but it echos all):  "It is the newest, hottest and most perfect round.  I love turning bunnies into a red mist."

Maybe it is good, but I need a few more facts before I jump in.

As Peg noted, the 7-'06 to 308 would be a piece of cake. Same casehead size, so just a barrel change. The 7mm-08 is supposed to be a VERY accurate round, (never shot one), and has better sectional density than 30 cal. It's also a factory load so ammo is available over the counter.

With the 300 BLK, you are dropping down to 223/5.56 head size/length. That is going to be a larger operation than just a change in the extractor. Even the '06 bolt head is going to be way big.
What was the original 8mm? 7.92x57 Mauser or 8mm Rem Mag?

Following along on m58's post, I have some questions....sorry I have no answers, but I'm not a "Rifleman" so don't have an overall understanding of what might make one cartridge better than others.

From what I have gathered here and from sources on the web about the .300 Blackout, I thought it's usefulness was that it did a better job than most of getting great .30 caliber performance for the AR platform.

So, I'm not sure what advantages it might have over other cartridges in a non-AR platform?

But I do understand that "because I don't have one" is a perfectly acceptable reason, just not necessarily a practical one.

I've shot one in an AR and in a bolt action (suppressed, at that).....and like it........but I posted in several other threads about it and will bow out here.

 Yes, 7mm STW and 7mm/8mm are the same and the best price I can find for ammo is around $2.00 a round. For the price of 150 rounds it can be chambered for something much cheaper to feed but a local FTF sale is probably a better choice. The more I think about it the more posting it for sale on the gun club board makes sense.

Yep....less than a .22lr and above a powerful pellet gun. The effective range is diminished with the sub-sonic heavy rounds, but short range effectiveness of the heavy bullet balances out the equation, IMHO. I don't know when I'll be able to lock down some range time, but I'd really like to run some chrono comparisons between the AR and bolt action. It's hard to schedule time because I don't own the rifles.
