44 magnum Super Blackhawk for deer
« on: April 09, 2012, 12:40:07 PM »
Okay, I'm bored with hunting deer with the 308.  I've already got a couple of bows. How about a large, single action revolver?  Whatcha think?  I mostly hunt tree stands in Tennessee and shots are usually under 50 yards anyway, unless I hunt the fields. I think a handgun to hunt with would be lots of fun.

I'm thinking the same for squirrels too. But a 22 handgun, not the 44 ;)

It's actually fairly common here in NH.
The second most common hunting handgun is the Ruger Red Hawk in .44 Mag.

I think the SBH would be an excelent choice.

I use a 7" Ruger Super Blackhawk with Hornady LeverEvolution (225gr FTX bullets) ammo. I feel confident out to 100yds on whitetails.

Yikes, 100 yards with a handgun.  That sounds like a challenge.

I only see the 225gr LeveRevolution ammo.  Looking at the trajectory charts, if it's 2.4" high at 50 yards, then it should be dead on at 100 yards. Am I looking at that right?  That's nice, if it holds it's trajectory that well.

Not a lot of folks down here hunting with 44 mags, nor pistols to boot. For deer, a lot of 7mm mags, 30-30, 30-06, etc.

This thread got me thinking and I looked up my hunting regs again!

It IS lawful to hunt coyote, fox, bobcat, bear, raccoon and opossum with a handgun here!  Bear is .357 magnum or larger caliber revolver.  Coyote is vague (gotta do some more homework) and coon and possum are .38 or larger pistol or revolver!

Cool!

Edit...coyote, fox and bobcat are .38 caliber or smaller!

Has to be .357 magnum or above in Indiana. Can't even use 10mm.  ??? Was looking myself for a good revolver in .357 to hunt with. As for coyotes, we can use our .223 AR's, but for deer, pistol calibers or shotgun slugs/muzzleloader. Booo.  I do have a buddy that can hunt with his .458 SOCOM.

Colonel Wesson killed moose, brown (grizzly) bear, elk, etc with a 8-3/4" barrel S&W revolver of the same caliber in 1935.  All one shot kills BTW...
