Remington Rifle Trigger "Flaw"?
« on: April 19, 2012, 10:51:09 AM »
I have watched videos and read articles about the alleged flaw in millions of Remington rifles.  As a conservative gun toting fool I ALWAYS err on the side of anything in our gun family.  I do not believe the trigger has a flaw Remington has ignored but I was hoping to hear from people who definitely know more than I do.

Check the archive, I'm sure there was a thread on it when the media was making a big deal about it a few months back.
My "Google - Fu" is strong today  ;D

I've seen both programs that were chronicled in the last year, most recently on NBC last week with Brian Williams.  From the reports, there appears to be evidence that the guns can fire with the safety engaged without the trigger being pulled.  It involves millions of rifles and shotguns of which I'm currently an owner.

I practice safe gun handling at all times and don't trust any safety mechanism to be 100% safe, EVER!  Anything made by man is going to break eventually.  I've tried to get my shotgun to recreate this problem and cannot.  I've removed the trigger control assembly, inspected it and made sure it was clean and properly lubricated.

Remington has reviewed hundreds of incidences and still considers the mechanism to be safe but has warnings in all of their manuals to NEVER rely on a safety mechanism.

It's sad that people have been injured or killed but in the cases they mentioned proper safety practices were ignored!  One guy who's investigated this for years lost a son because his wife inadvertently swept the boy with the muzzle and the 700 she was using "accidentally" fired and killed him!  A tragic loss for his family but, he still owns and shoots Remington rifles!

As Tom suggests, the media is reporting a story and it wouldn't be a story unless there was some drama involved.

I have viewed the videos a couple of times, and red flags keep jumping up:

Disgruntled owners that filed complaints and law suits;
An "industry expert" who is also a paid expert witness for the plaintiff, and he just also happens to have "invented" a better trigger group (even though the patent has run out you know as well as I do that he would demand payment for its use);
Stupid people suing a large company;
and they have finally found the ever evil gun that will shoot when just sitting there by itself.

I almost turned it off when they sensationalized the fact that Remingtons are so dangerous that they put the ten commandments of firearm safety in the owners manual.

Fail - Leaned a loaded firearm against the side of a pickup
Fail - Did not control a loaded firearm
Fail - Placed hand over the muzzle of a firearm

In the words of Ron White "You can't fix stupid!"
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

You own millions of rifles and shotguns?!?!?!? :o

So Billt and KPR might as well hang it up at this point. I'm coming to your house for the revolution!  ;D

Poorly worded...I own one (1) Remington 870 Wingmaster from 1969!  Even if I had the money those two guys spend on guns and ammo I'd probably use it elsewhere.
