How about uniform, uniforms.

I understand wanting to have your oun pattern, but let's look at this practically for a moment. Wouldn't it be mor economical, and far simpler to have one standard uniform for all branches?
I am a member of my nation's chosen soldiery.
God grant that I may not be found wanting,
that I will not fail this sacred trust.

They never have before and other than initial issue in boot, the GI, Marine, Sailor, Airman or Coastie pays for their own uniforms anyway.

Initial issue is deducted from your pay, or at least it was in 77.
Army and Marines have often used different uniforms, for example the Army did not use the camouflage that the Marines used in the Pacific, they never used the camouflage helmet covers, and the Army got boots long before the Marines, who issued "boondockers" and Leggings until after the Korean War.

Now that I think about it, it was in 1975 as well.  I stand corrected...you don't feel it because most of your paycheck is sent home and you're only given a stipend for smokes, cokes and geedunk...

I paid for mine in 92 and got uniform allowances every year after that.

There is a lot of differences in uniform requirements between Services.  The Army and Marines need a "combat" uniform" and tne Navy and Air Force need a "working" uniform but the Marines and Navy also need the uniform to function in a maritime envirnonment ie able to be on/off quickly for fire fighting or used as floatation.

My thing with the new Navy digital uniform was that the cost of material is much higher for a multi-color pattern vice a single color but at the same time the colors hide paint splatter and grease.  If they were single color SOMETHING would discolor them and make them "unservicable" and require replacement faster.

All I know is that in four years active, I never bought anything other than my initial issue boondockers.  I wore them out to the point that there was no heel left.  It looked like I was wearing Berkenstocks or Earth shoes.  The Command Master Chief used to slap me around pretty regularly towards the end but when you're short enough to jump off a dime and free fall for a week, you don't care much......

I had to buy some fatigues because we were issued a ugly uniform in the 70's until they went back to the old uniform in 76.  We could wear either/or and still be conforming.  I never spent the money on new dress blues though.  Never really needed them in my situation.  We were always so far out in the boonies we never needed them.  After boot, I don't think I wore my dress uniforms five times in four years.

I've gone through four complete sea bags.  Dungarees w&w/o ball caps, iron on or sewn on Crows, then utilities, plus woodlands  now digi blueberries.  Dress uniforms went from "Ice Cream man" or "Johny Cashes" to the Service Uniform "Black and Tans"  Dress whites and Blues have stayed fairly close until next year when the new ones comes out (Whites will add the striping on the collar and cuffs like the blues and be made of a better material while the blues will lose the 13 buttons and be a lighter material)

If I make Chief it's a whole new sea bag plus...

Have you considered going LDO?

With the current kidney situation I'll be lucky to be allowed to go to the end of this year, let alone any further.  I hit 20 in July so I'm pretty sure BuMed will tell me its time to leave.

Chief,LDO, or Warrant I'd still need all new uniforms :)

I never paid for a uniform the whole time I was in the Army, from 1978-1985. The initial ones were issued in basic, and then I received a clothing allowance every month. In truth, it probably didn't cover all, but to someone that no other bills, it worked.
