SKS prices
« on: May 12, 2012, 01:25:57 PM »
A friend of mine has been thinking about getting an SKS.
He knows squat about guns so he asked me to go with him .
First I mentioned looking online, but he wanted to be able to handle it, and he wanted it NOW.
After hitting every gun store in the area (5 of them) He wound up with a real good condition Norinco with 20 round mag and a Leapers scope (I told him it was a very cheap scope so he wont be disappointed if it's a POS ) for $400
One store had one that was beat to crap for  $399, the rest were all $450

What are store prices like in your area ?

About the same give or take 20-30 bucks.......

Sad, I remember when the Norinco's were $99 in the crate smeared in cosmoline. I passed on them because I said:

Who the hell wants a cheap ass foreign rifle?  :'(

Should have bought a six pack of them back in the day...

Scope? Really? ::) Throw that on a BB gun and tell him to get mags...

I bought a couple of those back in the day.
It's almost worth $350 not to have to clean that damned cosmoline .

If it takes a removable magazine, it's been modified, correct?

Correct, this one has a fixed 20 round box.
Same as the OEM but longer.

I won my Norinco SKS at a local sports club banquet as a door prize about twenty years ago. I bought a $45 dollar sporter stock, and a $3. dollar can of brake clean. About all I've done since cleaning the cosmoline off with the break clean is shoot it. It's been a nice little rifle to have leaned up behind the door. Back when our club was giving these away they we're buying the crate loads at $40-$60 each depending on the dealer. Kinda wish I would have gotten in on the group buy for a couple more.

At our most recent local gun show/bake sale/craft show, there were only a couple of norinco sks there, and they wanted over $500 apiece.
"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

SKS prices down here depend on the country of origin. Russian and Chinese SKSs have been hard to find, and pristine copies can go from $450 to $600. Yugos run in the $350 range. Accessories add to the price, but some of the cheaper accessories can pull the price down.

I remember when you could walk into a gun show and get one for $99.

Picked up a Yugo 59/66 three years ago for around 275.  Nothing fancy, and covered in cosmoline.  Still haven't spent as much time shooting it as cleaning it though.

I bought 2 for $125.00 each way back when. Just today i saw one for $349.00, and I asked the guy whats up with the price jump. His response was they just aren't as easy to find like a Mosin. He aslo added we just cant as many new Norinco's like back in the early 90's. Just sad if you ask me. They make good Hog rifles.

Way back when I think I paid about $150 for a Russian SKS with a laminated stock and that was a bit of a premium price at the time.
Seems to me that the 20 round fixed magazines for the SKS was an aftermarket product.  If anyone knows where to get one of those please let me know.
Got a couple of other SKSs also, but don't recall the country of origin at this time, but none are Chinese.  I kind of like the looks of the Albanian SKS but those go for a premium.  Don't see too many used ones around here, but the last few I have seen were in the $450 range.
Probably aught to by a couple of crates of those cheap Mosins while I can. :)
