Wait time for CPL/CCW poll
« on: May 19, 2012, 06:47:06 AM »
I live in Michigan (a shall issue state) and applied for my CPL in mid-March.  The county I live in had outsourced fingerprinting for CPLs and it took almost a month just to get fingerprinted.  The gun board only meets once a month and with the fingerprinting delay, my background check was not completed in time for the April meeting.  When I checked on the status last week, I was told my application did not make the May meeting, but there was a "good chance" it might make it in June.

Looks like it is going to take over 90 days for my CPL application to be processed.  I'm curious how long others waited...

In NC an 8 hour class is mandatory, including range time with your own firearm. Test and package, fingerprints, etc,....(with pmt), sent to Raleigh. Took 2-3 weeks.

When I moved to FL. The post BHO rush for CCW was on, late 08-early 09, Dept. Of Ag. handles the issuance. Took the gun show crash course. 2 hours, package, forms, fingerprints, open book test. Fire 1 rd. from a .38 furnished by instructor.

Fl. actually was smart enough to recognize the rush and added additional staff and it took about 3 weeks.

Now they have it streamlined to about 10 days to two weeks.

Sorry for your delay..90 days?   :-\

Here in MA people think it's difficult but nothing could be further from the truth.

A four hour NRA Home Safety course is the bare minimum without live fire.  Went to the local PD and filled out one form, had my fingerprints done, picture taken and paid the requested fee of 100 bucks and had it back in 10-14 days.  By law, they only have 45 days for the process.  It's good for 6 years.

Edit..some towns may be more difficult.

I got mine in NY back in 1985 or so,It took 6 months to get, mostly because of delays with the Judge that signed them.He would wait until he had a pile of applications before signing them. My Wife got hers in about 3 months,Guess they figured that a female had a greater need for a gun... ::) ::)

Oh,it is good for as long as I'm alive or revoked with good reason.

In NH the law stipulates no more than 14 days.
I had to wait 18 for my original here in Laconia because the lady who handles the paperwork had the Flu ( it was February ).
Renewal was 10 days.

Since you asked how long I waited, I answered accordingly.

In Alabama, I think it varies according to your county.  I'm not a drinker; so, I bought some hollowpoints for my pistol on my my 21st birthday and went to get my permit the next day (a Friday).  I was going to school about a half-hour away and drove up to the Sherrif's office to get it.  I filled out my paperwork and handed it and my money to the lady.  She said thanks and that I could pick it up the next week.  I asked if someone could come get it for me since my mom worked in that town and I was going to school out of town.  She said that would be ok then asked if I could come the next day (Saturday); I couldn't because of a field trip.  She then asked if I had time now; to which I replied, yes.  She proceeded to make the call and fill out the permit and hand it to me.  Took about 20 mins total.  Renewals since then are all in and out.

My folks just got theirs and they had to wait a few days mainly because the computer was down.  Long story short, it takes from no time to maybe a week to get one.

Hi;

Here in my County, the permit is good for 5 years then you have to re-new it for $20 and a week or 2 for the snail process to go through.  What is nice is that the Sheriff sends you a Reminder/notice that you are about due for renewal and tells you what you need and what to do to     get r' done !

IIRC it took about ten days to two weeks.  The sheriff sent me a reminder when it was about three months from expiring.  Renewed it through the mail.

Not sure if there is a time requirement on the Sheriff's Office to turn around the permit.

But the law says you must deal with the Sheriff in the county where you live or one in an adjacent county.

I went to the Clermont County, which is adjacent to Hamilton County where I lived.  Clermont was know os a pro-CCW county and it took just a couple of weeks.

I moved a bit north to Butler County, and was not adjacent to Clermont any longer so I contacted the Butler County Sheriff's office by phone to see what was required for renewal.  They wanted copies of all the paper work I handed in to Clermont County...of which I did not make a copy...I know...duh.

I called the Clermont County Sherrif's Office and talked to the CCW Officer there and told him the problem.  He said he'd make all the copies and mail them to me, but first he was going to contact Butler County and see if he could help them get their act together.

He called me back a day or two later and told me to contact Butler County again and that things should go better.

I did.  Got a scheduled appointment with them, showed my current permit, signed a form or two, talked guns with the officer for 20 minutes, left and got a call to come pick up my new permit the next week.

At least in Ohio, the attitude of the County Sheriff seems to make all the difference.

I walked into the Sheriff's Office with the certificate from my training class, paid them my $50, waited while they entered my information in the computer, which ran the background check, smiled purty for the camera, and walked out with the permit.  Entire process (not including the required class) took maybe 20 minutes, tops.
