Springfield Stainless 9 MM 1911
« on: June 07, 2012, 07:11:27 AM »
I've had my eye out for one of these for a long time, but no luck in finding one. The gun club in Scottsdale got several of them in, so I grabbed one. Typical Springfield. Nicely finished, beautiful Cocobolo grips, good adjustable sights. The guy who sold it to me told me they've had one for a few years now as a range rental gun. It's gets a ton of use because of the lower cost of 9 MM these days. He said they have never had an issue with it. He admitted it doesn't get the cleaning and lubrication it deserves sometimes. Good thing to know. I know some 9 MM 1911's have a reputation for not being the most reliable. I'll light it up next week with my new CZ and let you know how it went. You can really feel the difference in spring tension when you rack the slide on this gun. It's much lighter.

Nice!! I'd be interested in how well it works...I've heard the reliability comments before.

Can't speak to a Springfield Loaded but I've had five different 9mm 1911s and the only one I've had any problems with has been a Para (shocking, I know) and once they replaced the extractor it has run 100%.  I don't think I would carry one for SD but they sure are fun at the range.

P.S.  Just for the record, I don't think the 9mm is an unacceptable SD round, it's just that if I'm going to carry a 9mm I want more than 9 rounds.

Well I finally made it to the local indoor range to crank it up. I ran 200 rounds of 9 MM FMJ Ball through it without a hiccup. All of it was Federal Champion 115 Gr. FMJ. The gun functioned flawlessly with both magazines provided. No problems. The slide locked back on the last round every time with both mags. I even deliberately limp wristed a couple of rounds to try to cause a malfunction. No dice, it ran right through it.

The sights on this gun are really nice. They required a slight adjustment to the right to bring them dead on at 25 yards with a 6 O'clock hold. This gun is as boringly reliable as any Glock. At least from what I've seen so far. I'm not going to bother feeding it high priced defensive ammo because it is strictly a range gun. I lubed the hell out of it before I left, and by the time I had finished the last magazine, oil was oozing out of the slide most everywhere. After I got home I gave it the usual wet cleaning with clean Kerosene and a compressed air blow dry. I then relubed everything, reassembled it and she's good for another session. This gun is going to get shot a lot! It's very comfortable with much less felt recoil than any of my 9 MM Glocks. Overall I couldn't have asked for more.
