Took a week off
« on: June 11, 2012, 08:45:44 PM »
Some of you have seen this and some haven't.

I left for Canada on Sunday a week ago.  We drove for eleven hours, crossed the border with no problems and had a very good time.

Here is the evidence:

500#+
Eight foot squared
20 4/16ths skull green
Tikka T3 in 300 WSM
39.4 yards
Treestand with floor at 12' and railing at 15'
6:00 PM
Bait - Oats, used cooking oil from chicken broaster, and rotting beavers

Hide is at one taxidermist and will become a rug
Skull is going to Boone and Crockett for scoring after the mandatory 60 day drying period
I am accepting donation toward these bills!
Thankfully the rug charges are based on finished, because the hide shrinks through the process.

Boone and Crockett recognizes records over 20" and over 21"
The outfitter said he was very rough on me to get only 20 4/16ths, so it will stay over 20"
I will be invited to a banquet in Manitoba next April, and I will receive certificates recognizing the bear.

Son-in-law shot a nice bear about four hours after me.  He isn't sharing photos yet though.  His is a nice spring bear, and a trophy for a first bear.  However, some inconsiderate slob went and shot something a tad larger.

After photos, skinning and cutting off large meat cuts it was off to fishing.  We caught 124 fish in 16 1/2 hours over the next three days.  There is a four walleye limit, and you can only keep one over 50 cm (20") per person per day.  They want  you to keep the 30cm - 40cm fish.  Son-in-law caught a 26", I caught three 25", and between us we caught and released many 23" - 24".  We kept enough to supply the camp for a fresh walleye fry, and we brought our limits home.

I have told many hunting and fishing stories, but I am terrible at journaling.  I have been writing down many of the events while they are fresh, and I am going to journal this one.  Hopefully it is the start of an on going journal of these adventures.

For those that follow the hunting world, Luke Hartle of North American Hunting, Mike Scoby of Peterson Hunting, and Larry Washun of many shows and publications hunt up here.  There is a video on the web site done by Luke Hartle, and Larry's new show will premier with his hunt from two weeks ago at this outfitter.  The current Peterson Hunting magazine on the shelves has a story from Agassiz from last spring featured.

Nice trip!

I've longed for the Canadian fishing adventure but will probably never get there.  Don't think I'd do the bear thing, nothing against it, just not something I'm interested in.

I've read and spoken with several buddies that have gone walleye and smallmouth fishing in the north and it's legendary!  I drool for some fresh walleye.  It's all but fished out in the northeast...

I was talking with a guy today who was telling me about when they closed  Winnipesaukee , Lake and river, because they were fished out.
It was 1823.    :-[
