Not really useless, each of the different types of situation generates a different dynamic that requires a different response.
In the Flash mob situation the focus is to commit theft and vandalism with out interference, moving away, leaving, will cause the perps to pay you less mind.
In the shooting the focus is on bodycount, movement draws the eye and can be expected to draw fire, heading for an exit is not heading for safety, it is heading for choke point that increases your danger, the shooter knows where they are, and knows large numbers of targets will get jammed up there. In that situation you are safer staying out of sight somewhere you won't get trampled by the herd.
Last I heard he is credited with 71 casualties. I would bet half of the injuries were due not to gunshot, but to crowd action.

Undoubtedly, there were casualties due to massed bodies pushing for an exit!  The prepared person would be looking for an avenue of survivability that the average sheep would have ignored.  Diving for cover, under a seat, nearer an exit but not making themselves a target!  Think....think....think.....

I cannot fathom what I might have done but....I probably would have ignored the "no firearms allowed" signs anyway!

Unless there are manned metal detectors it's not even close to being "gun free".

That's been my philosophy for some time now!

Apparently he came in, sat down, got up at one point and went out a side door, propping it open, then came back in all geared up, shooting anyone who stood up or headed toward an exit.

If you can believe the cops that is. The Aurora PD Chief made the ludicrous comment that the shooter had a drum "clip" that could shoot 50-60 rounds per minute. Apparently all by itself, no rifle required. Of course, I was reading print media, so the reporter could have hosed the report.

Anyone check to see if Aurora's mayor is on the un-indicted part of the MAIG member's list?

BE PREPARED!

Which is something I've always said you can't be for 100% of everything.
You can be "as prepared as you possibly can" for a wide variety of unexpected events, but no one can possibly cover all avenues.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

No, you can't be physically prepared for every eventuality, you can't carry around bridging equipment in case a sink hole opens up near you. But you can prepare your mindset, to accept responsibility for your own safety, and the idea that when action is needed there is no one else you can depend on. Every time you see a news story, any story, not just the exciting ones, ask your self "what could I do in that situation ?" It conditions the mind to think of actions in unfamiliar circumstances.
When disaster strikes, any action is better than no action.

Remember:

Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it.

It is much easier to be prepared for anything that comes up than most think.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.
