Beretta head scratcher...
« on: July 22, 2012, 11:45:14 AM »
So I'm wondering what I should get myself for my retirement gift and head into a local shop.  I was leaning heavily towards a custom/customized 1911 or P229 but he didn't have anything interesting.  He did on the other hand have a pair of 92FSs, one FBI Academy edition and the other a 9/11 "United We Stand" edition.  Looked in decent shape and looked a little deaper a the 9/11 version and found it marked 1 of 2001.  It was marked basically the same price as a new 92FS.  Figured it wouldn't sit long, plus the "Blue Book" value was pretty close so it came home.  Checked a little more online and the first run was supposedly sold internal to Beretta, less than 30 mins up the road, then subsequent runs were done in Inox without the numbering.

Anyway, just curious I looked on GunBroker to see if any had sold recently.  Found one listed in Fla in May that sold.  Lo and behold it too is marked 1 of 2001.  So I go to Beretta's site to check the SNs and neither of them are able to be looked up.  I guess tomorrow I'll call the factory and see what I can dig up.

...and yes, I'll post pictures when I get a chance. ;D and hope Mama lets me keep this one and still get the "retirement gift."

Could be that is it not a sequential numbering, but, instead, it means that your gun is one of the guns in that run of 2001 guns....that way no one who got one of the guns from that special run would get any less or any more value than anyone else.

So every gun in that run will say   1 of 2001

If they were internal Beretta sales Solus may be right. That would avoid employees fighting over low numbers, and accusations of favoritism toward those who got them.

I was thinking.    Those guns would still require unique serial numbers??   I guess they could be assigned randomly so no one could tell which was produced first?

2001 unique and unordered serial numbers....they are probably pros at doing stuff like that.

No, they would just use consecutive serial numbers or else they would have the machine operators set aside frames and slides that fell with in a certain tolerance range, for example, +/- .005 is acceptable, but set aside ones that are +/- .001 that would give the randomized serial numbers.

The serial numbers are different, so are the part numbers.  The PNs are similar but mine has an FC after it.  Maybe the FC's were for employees and the std one was sold outside.  Hopefully Beretta will answer that when I get a hold of them.

You can get a "factory letter" that will give you all that information.
Alf did it at least once with S&W, they usually charge for it though.

The number 1 of 2001 doesn't sound like the serial number. This sounds like a mark to show a tribute to the attacks of 9/11. Is this on the slide? If so that is not the serial number. The serial number is put on the firing mechanism of any gun in this case the frame on the 92 series Berettas. Check the left side of the frame just under the dust cover. I have 3 Beretta 92 series and all three serial numbers are left side of the frame just in front of the trigger guard. In the nineteenth century Winchester came out with some Mod 73s that were marked 1 of 1000. Sounds like what Beretta did with these. You're looking for a number that begins with BER or A followed by some numbers, something like that anyway.
