"Novak" Sight cut.
« on: July 22, 2012, 10:53:20 PM »
Please forgive my ignorance here but I have a question about "Novak" sight cut.
I took the new Remington to the smith to get the trigger longer/smooth.
(As he was looking at it, a little metal fragment fell out of the thing).

I asked for night sights and he asked if I knew exactly what it took. I told him Standard Novak sight cut and he wanted more information than I have to offer.
This is what the PDF from Remington says..

What sights will fit the 1911 R1 factory dovetail cut?

The 1911 R1 utilizes a standard Novak type front and rear sight cut.  Other sight options available through outside sources will need to match this dovetail cut in order to be installed with as little potential for damage to the slide as possible.

Is there more than one type of a "Standard Novak" cut in the slide? (Round top).
Thanks..

Novak makes sights that fit a standard 1911 dovetail but their low-mount sights require some milling of the slide. This page shows both styles. http://www.novaksights.com/products/sights/models/coltcomgovwithout.html I didn't know they made anything other than the low mounts.

I'm actually looking at a set of these.
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/212860/xs-24-7-express-sight-set-1911-novak-front-cut-and-standard-rear-cut-steel-matte-tritium-dot
The more I think about my aging eyes, the more sense these make. I've resisted this type in the past, in favor of 3 dot but, I don't know. I think it would make for easier acquisition..
The problem is not knowing exactly what the specs are on the slide. It's just easier to order what fits in the first place, and I don't know exactly what is, based on what Remington gives me.

I have a set of XS sights and love them!  That being said, on my gun, the POA/POI changed dramatically.
