They got off easy.  Their football program will suffer severely for the next five years because of post play restriction and the reduction of football scholarships.  Supposedly no public monies will be used to pay the fine.

What they did was unconscionable.  They got off easy.  I'm glad there is serious talk of prosecuting those involved in the cover-up.

Even if Paterno had lived, this would have killed him.

What the people running the program at Penn did was reprehensible without exception or excuse. Sandusky is a vile pig and is going to suffer justifiably in prison. That said, though, since when is it the NCAA's responsibility to punish a school for criminal behavior? I thought that was the job of the LEOs and court.

I don't watch that much college ball, but the NCAA's actions smack of piling on, of doing something to be seen as doing something. Since this will affect people who were not involved, I see these actions as being comparable to those calling for weapons bans on you and me because of that asshat in Aurora, CO.

Very good point. I think the NCAA finds itself between a rock and a hard place on this. If they did nothing they would look as tolerant of this type of behaviour by the public as Penn State was, and out for the buck at all costs. This happened because Penn State put their football program, along with the river of cash it provided, ahead of child welfare. The public was appalled by it. The NCAA is linked to that behaviour no matter if they like it or not. So they felt by going along with the whole, "Off with their heads!", attitude the public was crying, they'd save face. When the $h!t starts flying in something like this, the first order of business is not to get any on you.

The NCAA is the governing body of collegiate sports.  Because of that charter, they have the power and the responsibility to make sure that these programs are run responsibly, legally, ethically and with the needs of the students as foremost in those decisions.

I think they got off easy as well!  Unlike SMU, who got the death penalty for paying students, children were harmed in a most heinous fashion, scarred for the rest of their lives!  The men responsible made a conscious decision to put themselves, the football program and the university above the safety of children that had no chance to defend themselves.

I'm just pissed as a Michigan boy that they didn't throw them out of the Big Ten as well!  They just don't belong...

They should also install a Port-o-let over Paterno's grave site...

I don't pay much attention to sports , but my thoughts are this.
The ones at fault here, who deserve to be punished severely, are, a dead guy, a jailed guy (see how he likes it )and college administrators who either covered for him or did nothing.
The ones who are actually being punished are current and future football teams and 10 students who will lose their scholarships.

Unfortunate collateral damage but, the football program WAS Joe Paterno!  He was going to retire and it would have suffered regardless.  The players are released to pursue other schools and the scholarships may be awarded to other schools.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to play for Penn State after this scandal.

Once again I fall back to my belief that universities exist to educate.  Sports is extra curricular.  Think back over the last six months and tell me how many stories you have heard about educational and research (benefit to society) coming out of universities versus sports.

End rant.

The only ones I recall were from a university campus' that didn't support the sports programs.  There was a Nobel awarded to a professor at UMASS School of Medicine in Worcester a few years ago!
