LWRC SPR or STAG 3G
« on: August 23, 2012, 10:31:05 PM »
I am about yo spring for a new BA rifle. I might get into 3gun.  I have narrowed it to the lwrc spr or the new stag 3g. If I go stag I will still have cash for decent optic but I will not have a lwrc. Any thoughts? Then there is always go completely different route and spring for the lwrc M6IC

Get the one you really want.

I went through this process recently.  I went with the Stag 8L-Plus that is configured similarly to 3G but it is still a carbine.  I ordered the rifle through a dealer and it came in one day over two weeks.  I picked it on Wednesday night.  I haven't shot it yet but today I'm taking it apart to inspect and lube today and going to the range to sight in my ACOG this weekend.  Pics and first range report coming soon.

That being said, I agree with Tom B, buy the gun you want.  I will also highlight that the optic is as important as the gun.  Make sure you get a quality optic.

Are you stuck on those two?  There are quite a few ARs out there that either work well for 3 gun or are designed like the Stag for 3 gun.  Larue's PredatAR falls in between those two and I don't think your giving much up to the SPR and you'd be in a little better position, with money, for an optic.

My $.02 and good luck

I agree with buying what you want. I have bought and sold several AR's. Really looking at getting a Stag as the next one. Don't know who DoubleStar is but see they are advertised everywhere. Then again, I am able to get the Smith and Wesson with Magpul furniture for a decent price. Decisions decisions. Would not mind the Ruger 556 but Rugers are hard to come by.

I shoot 3 gun when I get a chance....couple of comments...if you decide to go with a short rifle, go with a 16" mid/intermediate gas as opposed to a M4 length so you can change compensators without major surgery to the rifle...four sided rail systems are uncomfortable to shoot, try a small diameter full float tube like a VTAC JP....a good trigger is important....a comfortable pistol grip is important... good stock fit is important... good glass is important....ambi controls give tremendous peace of mind during barricade transitions....for reliability a shrouded bolt carrier group, pressure tested bolt, extractor "O" ring, and and properly staked gas key

you don't need to spend a truck load of cash to shoot 3 gun....

Hello to all that have posted here, my apologies for not getting back to you until now.  I have been away.

I ended up going with a Stag 3G left hand version.  Being that I am left handed in decided to try one made for me. I was a little apprehensive at first since all of my training and practice was on a standard AR.  The transition has been seamless. Malfunction drills had to be edited slightly in order to take advantage of gravity. (have to tilt the opposite direction when clearing rounds)

The Stag 3G... WOW what a weapon. Very good quality,  can't say enough about the barrel, handgaurd, and the trigger is perfect.  The trigger is better than any of my other choices would have been. I am very happy with my choice.  I have been able to get the gun and optic for less than some of my other rifle options alone. At the end of the day It's no LWRC but it is better suited to my needs regardless.

Mods I have made and will make...
I am posting a link to a video on my youtube channel about the ambi selector and TDC mod.

Also I added an ambi-charging handle LATCH,  just the latch.

The Stag 3G came with a milspec BCG. I will be polishing all bearing surfaces and some weight reduction milling as well.

Thank you guys for your time and help.
