Ruger No. 1 in 303 British?
« on: April 20, 2008, 10:05:23 PM »
I don't understand why Ruger has never offered the No. 1 in .303 British. I am a little mystified that they could see a big demand for calibers such as the 405 Win, 450-400, 450 Nitro and 9.3x74R but still no .303. Even if only for the British, Canadian, New Zealand, South African and Australian markets.

None of those countries allow their citizens to own or use military calibers, even when they are less powerful than civilian legal calibers. also if some one in this country wants to shoot a WW I era cartridge they will pick 30-06.
Any one out there think I'm wrong ? Why ?

Another suggestion - the .303 just ain't right unless a Smelly's wrapped around it.

Tom,
I think .303 is OK for those markets. There sure are a lot of them available in UK and Canada. The .308 and .223 were also popular calibers in UK the last time I was there. Which was just 2 years or so ago. I think if you check the latest editions of The Field and The English Shooting Times & Country Magazine you will find that Litt's offers .223 and .308 rifles for sale.

Tab,
.303 bullet is not a .308. It is fatter. It is .311 in.

CCD,
I could find lust in my heart for an original Farquharson .303 Single Shot. My favorite deer rifle is a Ruger No. 1 in 7x57.

If you're dead set on getting a single shot rifle chambered in .303

An excellent option would be to get yourself a Dakota "Model 10". http://tinyurl.com/4eeva7

Dakotas do fetch a pretty penny,but...

in my humble opinion,The Build Quality/fit/finish/accuracy make them worth every cent.

If I was going to spend what a Dakota costs, I would just get the Blaser or the Merkel instead. I sure wish there was some way that a American company could make the same style Jaeger(spelling?)action as those two. I am sure they could undercut the Blaser and Merkel in price by quite a bit. But unfortunately very few Americans actually hike(or WALK) while they hunt(most people SHOOT DEER versus HUNT DEER now) , so there is very little demand here for such rifles.

ccd,
Have you thought of calling Ruger to see if they would make one up for you? You never know. Ruger has been very good to me in taking care of my requests.

Ruger's Customer Service Number is:  603-865-2442

I have 2 No. 1s: my favorite in 7x57 and another with a left handed stock in 7 mm Rem Mag. All I can say is that they have been great guns for me. BTW I have shot deer from a stand and from a still hunt (hike) with the 7x57. Numbers have been about 70% to 30% as I have gotten older. But they were the other way around until fairly recently. The 7x57 is both a good walking around rifle and a good stand rifle because it is short and relatively light.
