Yep.  That's exactly right.  As scarce as hen's teeth though.  I've been trying to get a 10/22 mag cheap (HA) for years to convert it to a 17 HMR.  But the ability to take that 17HMR velocity up to a 40 grain bullet would really push the effectiveness of the semi-auto platform like the Ruger. 

Probably never will happen, but I can dream.

How about just changing the barrel ?
I'm not that familiar with the 10/22 but I know the barrel isn't that hard to change, is the chamber in the barrel, or part of the receiver ?

The chamber is part of the barrel and there are only two screws holding it all together. It's super easy to change barrels.

Tom,wont work the 10-22 magnum has a longer receiver,It was also prone to cracking from the magnum round which is why Ruger discontinued it.

Not talking about the magnum, in fact I had forgotten they made one.
A guy I work with has the .22 and the .17 HMR and they are identical  .

Tom the .17HMR is a .22 mag necked down to .17, the round would be to long for a 10-22 receiver. Not to mention it would be a single shot because the .22 Mag/.17HMR magazine wouldn't fit either.
