Parking the car

Some gleaning from posts past and present;

Always sit with your back to the wall, even if you have to ask someone to move.
Sit on the aisle seat, see above.
Know where your exits are.
Keep your eyes moving and your brain in gear.

A question here, What about parking the car?  Do you park in the getaway position?  From my observations, 99+% of people don't.

I was never LEO, did my stint in the service, was never an 'operator', but carried a gun for a living for six years.  The dome light in my car is disabled, and I always pull through to park. so I can drive directly away.  .  When it says head in parking only, I find somewhere else to go.  I also park where I cannot be blocked in, although this is sometimes difficult.

I always park with the front of my car clear when possible.  I either back in to the spot or pull through a double row of spots.

Folks have asked me why I do it...and rather than say it is for security/paranoia I have come up with a list of reasons why it is better to back in to a parking spot.

1.  You might be in much more of a hurry to leave than you were when you arrived.
2.  It is safer to back into a spot and pull out than to pull in and back out.
3.  You practice a not often used skill.

I like that reason best.
If there is a threat I can whack it with the back bumper just as easily as the front.

I tell people, mainly my wife and kids, that I back in because its that or backing out-either way you are backing up might as well as get it over with.  I have mentioned the safety factor as well when my wife was backing out looking for some pedestrians that were walking in front of the house, didn't go over well.  I also tell them, tongue in cheek, that I'm never in a hurry to get home but I'm usually in a hurry to get out of there

Up north here it's easier to blast over the wall the plow leaves at the end of your driveway if you are facing out.
Otherwise it tends to rip your muffler off.

Another good cover story is that in the construction and mining industries backing into your parking spot is mandatory as a safety procedure. It facilitates a fast exit should there be some kind of evacuation of the site. I know many people that have gone through the training and to this day always back into a parking spot. When asked they ALWAYS point to that training.
