Shot Timer Recommendation
« on: October 28, 2012, 11:28:58 AM »
I want to (finally) get a shot timer to help my training. I have never used a timer so don't know which brands/models are easy to learn, have a full set of features and are best for individuals to use by themselves. What are you folks using?

I have researched the CED7000 a bit. Is this the best value out there?

Thanks.

I don't know if these will help but they are links to other threads involving shot timers.

From talking to people at matches , the CED7000 has a poor reputation.  I have heard of buttons falling off, the batteries not lasting long enough, you have to plug it in to charge it.

I had the bigger CED timer which is blue and has a hinged flip open displat screen.

The thing I didn't like about it was instead of a nice clear sharp BEEP! it was a HONK!  Sounded like a sick goose to me.

I had two CED chronographs at one point.  I won the second one at a match.  The first one I bought.  At some point one to three of the LCD segments wouldn't light up.  So I eventually got around to shipping it back to them.  I think it cost me something like $50 to $80 to get it fixed.

I am just used to the customer service Dillon provides.

I have the Black PACT timer. It spits out some spurious split and transition times.

So this is the timer I wish I had bought in the first place:

I have a PACT timer that I've beat to death.  It does everything I've needed it to.  I've used the CED timers but wasn't that impressed, it just didin't feel right.
When seconds mean the difference between life and death, the police will be minutes away.

You are either SOLVING the problem, or you ARE the problem.

Thanks, guys.  I did a search for threads on timers. But had not seen those two. Also, I had not researched the PACT timers. Because of your comment, I did. Their club timer looks like it could do all I need. The two CED timers linked to also look nice.

Back when I was match director, the IL DNR bought us 6 of the Competitiom Electronics Pro timers I linked to above.  One for each stage we would put on.

I never got any complaints from the shooters at my matches.

This is the Pact timer I have now:

When I hit the review button, it gives me some 1,746 second long split time.  I had done a search on the BE forums about a year ago.  Seems to be a common and well known problem.

IIRC, the fix was to take the battery out and put something metal across the connectors inside the timer.

That is supposed to clear out the memory or something???

I just never got around to it yet.

I have the Pact II.   It does on occasion display some obviously high number.  I wouldn't trust it for a match, but for timing myself at the range it's great.  I like that it shows shot #, total time and split time all at the same time.  I've posted a picture somewhere showing such as documentation of my shooting.

Indoors I do have a problem with it picking up echos.  There split times are generally right at 0.10 so it's easy to ignore them.   They highly recommend you DON'T go in and adjust the sensitivity.  I may anyway.

At the Glock match they used CED Pros and were running two competitors in the each bay at the same time.  Maybe only 15' apart.   None of the ROs were picking up false signals from the other shooter.  I asked (politely) if I could verify this and the RO started his timer while the other shooter was firing.  No stray shots were recorded.  That spoke highly of the timer.

By the by.  IPSC has a shot timer for the smart phone.  Check with your app store.  It's a little flaky at times, but I use it to pick up dry firing since setting sensitivity is very easy with it.    I've never tried it with live ammo.
