Who says you can't have a fire and a flood at the same time ?

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/superstorm-leaves-blazes-wake-least-50-homes-burned-125634618.html

A six-alarm fire in Breezy Point, Queens—a coastal area under mandatory evacuation order ahead of the storm—has destroyed about 50 to 100 buildings. Nearly 200 firefighters have responded to the massive blaze, a challenge to battle because first responders had to wade through chest-high water to reach the homes.

A couple of guys I work with live closer to the heavily affected areas. They say that there is a lot of survival theft...gas siphoning, food looting, generator theft, that kind of thing. Along Long Beach Island and the beach communities to the north, azzholes have been taking boats in and looting the houses that are left. They now have citizen boating patrols.

One guy says he's going to start patrolling with a spotlight, since we can't be trusted with guns in NJ. I told him to stay home and protect his family because our nanny goverment will take care of those other folks.

There's nothing like that going on where we live (south of Sandy's eye)- life is pretty much back to normal. We're still on guard though.

NEW YORK (AP) — The fight for fuel after Superstorm Sandy is starting to get nasty.

New York City authorities say a motorist was arrested after he tried to cut in line at a gas station in Queens early Thursday and pointed a pistol at another motorist who complained.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown says 35-year-old Sean Bailey, of Queens, was arrested on charges of menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. It wasn't clear whether he had a lawyer.

Of course, in NJ they refused to let the Alabama Power crews help because they're not union.   Shoot self in foot.

Then there are the companies carrying on like nothing happened.  B&H Photo in downtown Manhattan, a very large A/V supplier, apparently hasn't missed a day shipping merchandise.   I order a $800 delay unit from them on Tuesday, 2 day ground.  It arrived Thursday before 11am!   (The shipping label and tracking data confirm origin was in Manhattan.)

I can't quite figure out that article.  I think it relates to some crews from Alabama not "Alabama Power" crews.  My brother is with Alabama Power in Atlantic City, and they're bringing in more crews and planning to be there at least through the first of next week.

In either case, not accepting help because it isn't union is stupid.

Bunch of crap...you don't know your Jersey territories. Seaside Heights is mobbed up, so of course no non-union labor accepted.
A caravan of about 15 trucks FROM Alabama (guys had accents too) were all over our area working like 24/7 DOGS. They got wife's work back on the grid. Nice guys too. They were partial to the Wawa stores and high end restaurants.

Once again an example of union protecting their members' pocketbooks without consideration for the people they are supposed to serve to provide the funds for those pocketbooks  >:(

It is sad when the checklists for an emergency like this start off with balancing overtime and benefits, and maximizing benefit for certain workers as higher priorities than making the scene safe and restoring services.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.
