A nation of sheep ?
Think about this, not only are we conditioned to obey authority figures, we are even conditioned to obey machines.
It could be argued that the driver who tries to beat the red light is a better "American" than the obedient sheep who slow down and stop on the yellow .
The person trying to beat the light is taking responsibility for his own safety and not putting his faith into the inanimate light.
It takes a society obedient to lights to institute "zero tolerance" policies that remove the burden of thinking from the individual.

Yep.

If you have not seen any of retired Lt. Gen. Boykin's (now a pastor) sermons and speeches, check some out on youtube.
I posted one in the 'prayers' section a while back.
He hits some good points.

Politics is purely the exercise of power.
Economic power used wisely will strengthen the economy, used unwisely it will destroy it just as effectively as military power.
Political power can be used to either strengthen or weaken a country through the behaviors it encourages or discourages.
God has his own areas of concern.
The acquisition and application of power are not his province.
THAT is what the founders were trying to tell people.
Generosity is a matter for God, the public treasury is not.
