One of the forums I frequent for "preparedness" and generally a very good "How To" type forum
Canning, Radios, Gardening ... all the self sufficient things one would hope to be good at - just because.
(Hate to use the dooms day prepper tag on it....)
IF you can get by the host's GRANDIOSE style.... there is some good info there ... Wheat from the Chaff so to speak

The host/owner was living in a BIG metroplex and decided to practice what he preaches - he pulled up roots and purchased half a "mountain" in Arkansas (really a small-ish hill by my standards here in Idaho) and started to set up a "homestead"

Well he lasted in AR for about a year and then his significant other missed her parents SEVERELY so he's picking up roots at her request (I get the impression it was a DO IT OR DIE type of request) and is moving BACK to the Metroplex...

They had their offer for a new house accepted but apparently is coming up short on the down payment  - so he is "offering" life time memberships to his forum for a mere 6 years of membership payments up front .... (he is honest about the lifetime membership and it will be going towards his home purchase)

I just thought it was odd asking the community to pay up front (if they so chose to.... and for a limited time (length unknown) and a limited number of lifetime memberships (THAT number ALSO to be determined (which I suspect will work out to be slightly MORE then what the agreed upon down payment for the house (but that's just me thinking out loud now) "for life" so he can buy his house to keep the marital peace and move back to where he wanted so desperately out of in the first place.

Man o man .... there is a thread over there now all about me and how I'm such a hater- and on the blog I'm an ASS CLOWN - and a whole slew worse...

WOW .... then the lemmings came along and started the "Oh pick me pick me to be anointed with the privileged of paying for 6 years in the hopes you'll still be running a web site and podcast and that you don't get hit by a cement truck next week and all my money evaporates"

(He has only been doing this for about 1 year now. - so one year hosting and asking for a pre-pay of 6 years)

For full disclosure - here is my reply

I love what you do – and certainly appreciate all the work you put in to everything you touch.
But offering a “new shiny” to the rabid followers so you can come up with closing costs for your home purchase – just doesn’t sit right.

You are honest in saying THAT is WHY your offering it… when does the next one come… the new 2013 JEEP Grand Cherokee with the VW Diesel engine down payment?

The help your in-laws repair the transmission on the class C R-V drive?

I’ve been planning on buying a one year subscription for my self this Christmas, and don’t think this will sway me to not get it now… but help me pay for my new house..

Now I realize the sites are his... and my ideas are not "Free Speech" any more then they are here with out moderation for civility and user codes of conduct... But was the reply REALLY all that negative to be branded with the scarlet letter?

Wow.. I gained even more appreciation for our little electronic home here. As MB says.... the best forums on the internet....

I have never paid to be a part of a forum yet,and I don't plan to.  That said, who knows what tomorrow brings.  I subscribe to magazines, but in over 40 years of doing so I have only had one go under and lost out.  They are a full business with a succession plan.  What is this guy's succession plan?

If you leave there to devote more time to us and you start feeling homesick, just let me know, and I will call you TAB, FQ and a few other four letter words

Yeah, I agree. It seemed a little... odd that he would do this promo the way he did.  (especially since on his now defunct "business podcast" he stated that he made over $100,000 a year.)  

I think the fact that he doesn't drive to work anymore and can't yell at other drivers is causing him to blow up on his audience instead.

While his show has been going on for years (You tube vids from 2009) I can see an implosion of it happening before any economic collapse in the U.S..
