Don't know as I have the time to wait
« on: December 03, 2012, 04:59:31 PM »
to save for the purchase of a 'EBR'.  The current political/economic climate have me concerned.  So I've been scouring the net looking for a bolt action in 7.62 NATO with a DBM that holds more than 5 rounds.  The Ishapore Enfield and the FR8 are a couple that I've looked into.  Should be easy to mount optics, especially long eye relief scopes.  Could any of youse recommend others?

All depends on what you are looking to spend.

Savage and Remington both have "tactical" (  :-X ) bolt actions in .308 with detachable magazines.....as well as the Ruger Gunsite rifle.

I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

Gun control has become a smoke screen issue .
When the Dems need to distract the sheep from another economic screwing, Constitutional infringement, or legal, or ethical violation by one of their members they float an AWB, or magazine ban.
All the complacent blowhards rant and scream "They'll get my guns from my dead hands", "They aren't taking MY Rights" blah, blah blah.
Mean while they don't even notice the disappearance of privacy laws, TSA feeling up Grannies and little girls, but not young Muslim men, and a Govt setting them up for 75%+ unemployment, triple digit inflation, and $22TRILLION  in debt.
The Dems would be wise to rescind the NFA and GCA 68.
Let everyone mail order belt fed machine guns.
None of the sheep would use them for their intended purpose anyway, they might miss "Dancing with the Stars" or "2 1/2 Men".
The people of this nation deserve whats coming.

Ain't so worried 'bout gun control issues.  More 'bout me and the neighbors taking out the takers after the dollar tanks and the world economy collapses.   Short range work is covered.  Couple or more AR's in the 112 houses in this planning district.(about 4 square miles)  Lots as a matter of fact.  Some of us have been talking.  I need a rifle anyway.

Ok, to put the politics aside, how much do you have to spend? Lets start there and then we can start making reasonable suggestions rather than blowing smoke. Are we talking $300, $500, $800, $1,000? There a lot lot of good rifles to be had at any of these price points.

Lots of normal hunting rifles will suffice if you are unwilling to wait out the end of this bubble. Although in all honesty I think supply is much better than in 2009-9. Not sure as to why you seem fixated on the  DBM as a requirement. The Savage Edge and Ruger American are both available in 308 and a lot better choice than the FR8 which is strictly 7.62 only. If you are buying out of immediacy one of these two would probably be the best choice. The Edge is even available in the SR model in 223 and 308. Around where I am there are tons of used hunting bolt action rifles really cheap. It seem as if MSR's and handguns are the only sure sellers for gun shops around here, so that is what they are stocking.

If you want a semiauto, there seems to have been a moderate import of Chinese SKS's by Century Arms that can be had relatively cheaply from any of the online dealers.

By 1/1/13 I should have +/- $650 cash.

@ccd

7.62 NATO for surplus ammo at a decent price.  Accuracy and range too.  (In a pinch I can shoot .308 and not have to worry about pressure spikes)

DBM w/more than 5 rounds for easier/faster reloading and more rounds downrange before I have to.

A CMP Garand would be sweet, but, it is in 30.06.  Not so reasonably priced as NATO surplus.

Leave it to an academic to want to avoid the whole reason FBG is working under a time limit.

Tom, the guy wants a gun, not a lecture. Who's the academic now?
As to FBG's post, Classic Arms has Saigas in .308 for $600, though they are out of stock. I know nothing about these, though their 7.62x39s are well regarded. If you just want a .308 rifle that will be a hunting/SD multi tasker, mabe think lever action? OTOH, if you're not hung up on .308, for $650 you can easily get an AK. (It would be be my choice over bargain basement .308s). You can also get a starter AR for that same amount of cash if you shop carefully. There is also the 30-30, a classic for a reason, and they are cheaper than dirt, as is the ammo.
Good luck.

Here's the Saiga

Here's a savage with a four round mag at gunbroker.
Sorry, the link failed, just try gunbroker.com and hit .308 lever action in the search field (they seem to be going in your price range).

Here's an AK link
