Upgrades for my baby
« on: December 07, 2012, 08:31:15 AM »
Finally sold the DMPS! So I could continue with my master plan of creating the perfect long range beauty.

About 6 years ago I built my first rifle. It has since been referred to as the frankin-gun since it is an amalgamation of specs from several different long range type rifles, all built on a Remmington 700 Short Action. Well last night it got its final upgrade.

From this:

Now, a whole new level of bad-assery!

I abandon the HS Precision Stock in favor of a McRee Precision, and went from a 5 round internal magazine to 10 rd Badger Ordnance detachable mags.

Yes, both for length of pull and cheek rise. However the way it came from the factory the length of pull was perfect and when I add my own cheek pad the rise is just right for me. The only thing that will take some getting used to it the fact that the trigger is slightly forward from the grip compared to the HS Precision stock, but not enough to cause me problems. Just something that will take a few rounds to get used to. Not even so much operating the trigger, but when I index my trigger finger on the side of the trigger guard is when I notice the difference.

It's a .308 Win, but I load a little hot, so muzzle velocity is right at 2650 fps. Now that I have this one completed, I have my sights set on a .338 LM. Have to sell the truck for THAT build though.

That's perfect, JC. For me, I'd stop right there, keep the truck and start saving pennies for an AR in .308. I like to keep my cartridges to a minimum of types. Lust, however, always gets the better of me!

Actually I sold the AR in .308. I had to in order to afford the upgrade. (Stocks are pricey!  :o) The idea was to minimize my gun cabinet. Bare bones now. Everything in there has a purpose and there will be no more standing in front of the open cabinet scratching my head and wondering which one to take.

Nice looking rifle.  What barrel and length?  What cheek rest?

I did that too, and I gotta say, it sucks! I was looking at all these old guns I didn't want that I inherited and saying, why do I want that? Lets trade it off for something I do want.My gun cabinet is a lot smaller, but I did check off the boxes I thought I wanted checked. Still? Wrong call! Keep most of your old guns, you won't miss them till they're gone. Just my .02.
