Frankly an activated charcoal suit (like scent lock) or used MOP gear which I use for bow hunting, will keep your body clear. As to breathing? Unless, as Frosty posted, you're going to carry a mask around, just piss on a bandana and wear it like a mask and hope for the best.

Save your $$. The chances of you having it when TSHTF are slim unless you carry it with you 24-7.. The canisters you need for the chem(s). you want to protect yourself from don't last for ever on the shelf (shelf life), plus the canisters are good for a onetime shot and can be expensive to buy. As for variables there are a few such as organic or in-organic?, concentration of Chem(s), wind, temp, humidity and others like mask fit. You can have the most expensive mask there is and still have leakage around the edges if you are walking, talking, running, sweating, laughing etc. I have to get a mask fit test every year to be sure there is no leakage. As for the masks that NATO & our military issue, keep in mind that they are there for use by soilders that are in a war & are expendable, they do offer limited protection to a point. Compared to what I use, I consider them false a sense of security.

I understand about the leaks and I'm fit tested once a year for SCBA.  Good point about the use for war...leans me towards SCBA which has it's own drawbacks unless you are plugged into a cascade system.  My training has been for H2S which is somewhat lethal in the quantities I've worked around.  One shot cannisters are OK...the cost seems relative to the need for a 1/2 day or so...if the need is for longer than a few hours you'll probably need to be in an atmosphere controlled bunker anyway.  I'm mostly concerned about train derailments and such....I remember the candy stripers in and around where I grew up so I had some bad dreams when I was younger and want to have something to don on to give me a fighting chance should I need it.  I can keep it in my office and my vehicle so that covers 98% of my time away from home.

Rastus,
Just curious as to what your job is? Sounds as though you are very close to rail/railyards? Confined space?

Office job most of the time.  Confined space...yep, the building...most people don't consider that a confined space that pumps in air from the outside you cannot control.  Neither do they consider the fact that the railway circles 1/2 of downtown and divides part of downtown where I work.  We have petrochem across the river and the storms blow in from that direction.  Used to be in and around Baton Rouge with LOTS of petrochem around which is where I remember the candy stripers from.  I also travel to our well locations where we have H2S sources hench the fit testing, etc.

I'm just looking for something to get me out of the building and in the truck to get upwind of whatever may come my way.

What are you calling "Candy Striper's" ?
The ones I remember were teen age girls who volunteered at the hospital .

Cream colored railroad tank cars with a brick red stripe around them.  Look up prussic acid for the real name.  Nasty stuff but highly useful in petrochem business.
