Dang it.. BRD hit again, now what do I do??
« on: April 29, 2008, 01:59:53 PM »
Ok, so I went to a show this weekend, with the boys, to just have some fun.  I walked away with a stripped lower, so now I just have to do something with it.  Oh, but what to do..

I could build up that 6.5/6.8 that I want to.  My issue here is that I prefer rifles, not carbines.  I am still trying to find someone that makes a barrel in 6.8 in at least an 18" length.  I suppose that I could build a carbine since I don't have one yet.

I could also build another 5.56, but with 1/7 or 1/8 barrel, heavy, free float and the works.  Maybe that .300 Whisper...

Well, not much more you can do with BRD but buy BRD related stuff. I'm partial to the 6.8, in carbine, able to hit harder inside modern combat radii.

I had a 300 whisper (300/221) in the past and it was a blast.  I tried it for competition and it didn't quite work out like I needed, so I got rid of it, but I'm thinking about getting back into another one.

Erik,

My understanding of the .300 is that it is meant for short range, say 100 to 200 max, and for suppressed weapons.  Am I wrong in that understanding?

I have always been practical in caliber selection, so I think for once, I can just go out and do something different.  Yes, I do consider the 6.* as different, although it is becoming more common.  There is some thoughts of .458 SOCOM, but I am not sure that it would fit my profile.. :)

Bidah,
Sorry for the slow reply.  I've been out of town for a while and I did not have internet access.

Yes the 300 was designed as a close quarters, suppressed weapon.  300 yards is about the max I'd try to engage anything.  Inside 150, it's a pretty good hammer.

I've been looking at the 458 SOCOM myself.  There's just something about that round that motivates me.  Not sure what I'd do with it yet, but I'm working on some applications.

Erik, you are all right.  I did some checking further and there is more supersonic stuff out there for the .300, but believe from what I have ready you are spot on.  I have seen pretty much the same issue with the .450 Bushmaster and the .458 SOCOM, in that they are really meant for inside of 300 at most.  While that is ok, and maybe I will, I am looking for something for 500 and under.  Of course I could change my mind at any time.  :)

I have been mulling it over, and I believe that I will build it as a carbine this time.  I don't have one yet.  I have been looking at either a mid-length, or maybe a dissapator with a mid-length block.  The next question is can I get a carbine to shoot 500 with any sort of steam/accuracy?  Of course I can just pick one, and if I don't like it, then I can just swap the barrel/bolt and off to the next caliber.  I  love AR's for that.

I don't think accuracy will be a problem.  The real question is how much "steam" are you looking for?  There are plenty of two-legged animals taking a permanent dirt nap that made the critical mistake of thinking they were a safe distance away from the infidels.  If you are looking for a good, across the board round for training, varmints, and carrying in the field, I think the 223 is fine, but I get the sense you are looking for something a little different.  The 6.5 is a great choice, but I think it needs a longer barrel to really take advantage of it's full potential.

Maybe it's time to go wildcat and create a new round?  I've always thought a 6.8 spc necked down to a 25 cal. would make a great round.  I'd like to see what it could do driving the 25 cals. out of an AR.  Velocities should be pretty good and the 25 cal. is a great bullet.

I'd better stop now or else I'll end up talking myself into building one!

Erik, that is a fantastic idea.

I know that they make .243 barrels for AR's in the .308 platform, and running 90 to 110gr bullets.  Not as good of a BC as a 6.5, but I don't think that much is needed.  I will have to see what other bullets you can get in that range.  Mate that with a 6.8 case, which would give you darn good volume, much better than a .223 case.  That should give you good accuracy out to around 500, and should get decent power/expansion out there too.  You would probably want an 18" barrel though, but that is ok to me.

I happen to know someone who has done wildcats before.  I will have to talk to him when I get home next week if I can get a hold of him.  There are a number of custom AR barrel makers such as SSK.

Great Erik, now the wheels are really spinning... :)
