In wake of Friday’s school shooting, Dick’s Sporting Goods suspends sales of ‘modern sporting rifles’ nationwide

In a statement sent to media this morning, the chain explains:

“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.

Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.

We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy.”

During the time of mourning?
Like that is going to make some difference.

I guess Toyota could suspend sales of autos during the grieving period after a drunk driving murder.....  ::)  ::)
What?
They'd go out of business due to the volume of drunken murders?
Say it ain't so!

That's an easy one...
Thier website has a Contact Us page for retail stores
http://69.8.223.148/dsgcontactus/
Makes it pretty easy to explain to them that I will not be shopping in thier store anytime soon as the only thing I go into one for is firearms and ammunition.  The two local to me don't carry squat for camping and I could care less about golf and trendy sports clothing.

Just went into Corporate:

I read under a press release that Dick's will not be selling or displaying firearms in response to the violent attacks in Newtown CT.  I personally believe hat that sends the wrong message to the general public.  Yes, it was a tragedy and there should be dialog as to how to prevent something like that in the future, but to deny the rest of the population access to legitimately purchased sporting goods.  Limiting firearms sales is not the answer.  Firearms are used by millions for sporting and recreational purposes everyday with very few incidents of injury or death.  It is not until one is mishandled or someone that should not have access to the firearm gets a hold of one that there is an issue.  Instead of not selling them, how about donating a portion of the sale to the families and community?  Dick's is shown to be charitable to the community; additional sales could be brought in by those looking to purchase a rifle but were undecided.  Instead I know of a group that has already decided that if you don't want our money, we won't give it to you, and not just in the short term.
When seconds mean the difference between life and death, the police will be minutes away.

You are either SOLVING the problem, or you ARE the problem.

Actually, in 2009 (the most recent year for which statistics are available) shows an average of 30 people who died each year in drunk driving crashes.  Not to minimize the tragedy in Connecticut, but I hear nobody calling for a ban on Jack Daniels or Buick.

Each Year? Sounds more like each week. Are you positive on that stat? Just curious.  ???

CT had 79 in 2011 all by their lonesome.

MADD has very good stats and charts to compare years and states.  They are showing declines each year, and all of that without bans!

I quit going to Dick's years ago.  As a matter of fact, right after they opened their first store here.  I visited bought a couple of loss leaders and haven't been back.

I just don't buy guns and related items from stores that sell ball related sporting goods.

If you quit going to Dicks, please be sure to let them know.  Otherwise it's a meaningless gesture.  Take just a minute or two and give them a call at 866-677-4771 (M-F 8-6:00 EST).  Be pleasant and courteous and just let them know your intentions if their new policy continues.

I sometimes shop at the Upland, CA store, so I'll be calling tomorrow.

I sent them a nice email saying I won't be supporting their business even though that is where I normally got my running shoes, golf equipment because it was close to my office and could stop there on my lunch hour.  The only gun item I bought from them was .22 ammo.   They made their choice, I made mine.

Sent them my letter stating they lost my business forever.
“As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people.  On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron.”  H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun,  July 26, 1920.
