9MM Single stack suggestion
« on: January 04, 2013, 12:49:52 AM »
Thinking about getting a single stack 9 mm.  Thinking of steel or alloy, but might go polymer.  Older models OK.
Any suggestion?

New or used?  What's you price range?  What are you going to use it for?

Being a 1911 kinda guy, I'd suggest you look at some of those.  They are not cheap though.  Kimber makes a lot of their models in a 9mm version.  If you have the coin, checkout the Dan Wesson Guardian.
Most of the new single stacks are a lot smaller and/or are sub-compacts.  Not my cup of tea.
The Ruger SR9 isn't a single stack but it is amazingly thin for a double.

Used:
The old Sig P225/P6 is a great gun that wont break the bank.
The old S&W 39s can still be found for a decent price as well.

There aren't all that many single stack 9mm out there except for mini pistols, since 9 is so narrow anyway. You get a smaller round that is commonly held to require multiple shots for a stop, but you reduce capacity with single stack. I don't think it's a very popular platform.

Offhand, the ones I can think of are:
Para Carry 9/PDA9
Kahr K/P/CW9
SIG 225/P6, 239
S&W 908, 39
Diamondback DB9
Ruger LC9
Various 1911s from STI,SW, Kimber, and others in 3.5, 4.25, and 5"
When seconds mean the difference between life and death, the police will be minutes away.

You are either SOLVING the problem, or you ARE the problem.

Definitely take a long look at the Kahr line before you make a final choice, I have one of the little CM9's and it's a very well made pistol. If they made a high capacity 9mm I may have bought one instead of my FN.

My daughter-in-law has a Ruger LC9 and loves it. I have not shot it, but have held and fondled it. My son says it is a sweet shooting gun. I have never had the inclination to own a 9mm of any type, but if I did, it would be a strong first choice.
I have a Colt .380 mini Gov't Model and the Ruger LC9 is not much larger and because of the polymer frame is about the same weight and it packs 7+1 of the stronger 9mm.

I just bought my wife the M&P Shield. She bought me the Kahr K9 Elite '03. Both, of course, are single stack 9's. I have wanted that Kahr for years. It was worth the wait. EXCEPTIONAL shooter! Good luck finding a Shield unless you are willing to pay substantially above list price. (I did, but it made my wife happy. Fair trade IMO.)

If you want a 1911 platform check out the STI Spartan and Trojan.  I have a Shield and love it!  The Sig 938 is a small ss 9mm which I am hearing a lot of good things about but it is more a pistol for the more experienced shooter.  If my eyes were a little better I would probably pick one up and see if it might replace my Shield.

Thanks for the input.  My biggest problem is that I don't know what I want.  I have smaller hands and a lot of the double stack 9 mm just seem big for my hand.  I have an old Browning Hi-Power that fits well as do 1911s.  I once had a Ruger P89 that I sold, as it was just to big.  Haven't been a big fan of most of the poly framed pistols as they just seem clunky and muzzle heavy.  I was thinking of using it as a carry gun on some occasions.  I know that 9 mm may not be the best, but I usually carry a Walther PPKS in .380 as do many others carry .380.  Fondled a few at the gun shop today, but nothing called my name.  Still thinking this one out.
