vacuum sealers
« on: January 10, 2013, 10:46:24 PM »
Any body here use vacuum sealers for food, ammo, spare parts, guns etc.  just wondering what brand, kind, model you use and what you think of it.  I think some have a port on them you can hook a hose to to remove the air from other objects,

I haven't looked at them recently, but one concern is the availability and cost of the bags.  Also, if I remember correctly some of the bags used were far more pliable, thicker, and flexible than other bags that seemed more like a cellophane type and would seem more prone to tearing.

So do you use one, and what are your thoughts?

I had a neighbor that used one for ammo storage that I think he got at Wally's or Sam's, but he is long gone to check with.

The ones from Wally World worked good for me.  Just threw in a few moisture absorbing packs. I stored a FN FAL under my house for over a year to hide it from a nasty ex wife who told the judge she wanted all my sporting equipment.  I had no damage at all. ;D
Give me liberty or I'll get my guns and get it myself.

Yup - Mine is so old... I can not tell you who's it is.
I bought it to see if I'd like it - with the intent of getting a "better one" if the test bed worked out...
That was YEARS ago and the test bed is still working.

Another good use for them are "bug out - survival" packs - nothing like keeping some toilet paper dry
extra clothes - socks - etc...

Vacuum packed 7.62x39 in flat pack for easy stacking also... fun tools... and 10,000+ uses.

We have used several different brands intended for light duty residential use. Foodsaver brand machine, and bags were the best we could find. We intended to try commercial system this year but the cost has been prohibitive. The foodsaver  system has helped us to unintentionally put meat in the freezer without spoilage for over five years.

I have vac packed some ammo for long term storage but haven't broke into them yet. They are still sealed after ten years.

Food Saver for the vacuum sealer, and for extra protection some vacuum packs go into BioSeal.

I like the Food Saver and the bulk rolls.  I have sealed a couple guns for adverse conditions travel.

M58, what is the BioSeal?

Are the bulk rolls Food Saver brand?

Foodsaver bags bulk rolls for us are easily sourced from Sams club or online such as Amazon.

I've been happy with a plain jane Food Saver V2222 from WalMart...put up some dried stores in bags (roll material) until I saw the Wendy DeWitt video on food storage... changed to canning in glass Mason/Ball jars... get the 2 attachments for vacuum sealing glass canning jars....if you are not familiar with Wendy DeWitt (LDS), the below video is a must for someone starting long term food storage.... as commented, an AR will fit inside one of the sections of roll material without a scope....

Foodsaver V2490 is what I got to replace the original one I got almost 30 years ago.
Best piece of kit that I ever bought, wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

If you process/bone your own game, these are one of the MUST HAVE items on your list right along with a knife and a freezer.

Bulk Rolls of Vacuum Bag

It is available by brand name or generic.  It is one continuous roll in a tube form, you cut off the length you need and seal one end, put your items in and vacuum seal the container.

BioSeal

This is a product I sell in the death care industry.  It has been around in several other industries for different purposes.  Some armies use it to store and ship ammunition.  I market it for containing human remains and evidence from several sources.

It is a multi-ply product with poly on both sides and aluminum in the middle.  It is three feet wide and in rolls of 100 or 300 feet.  Cut the length you want and heat seal it.  There is a way to vacuum seal it as well, and I train in that when I sell it.

When utilized the product is a welded metal container that is 100% moisture and air tight, and it is chemical resistant.  It can be x-rayed through, and it is crematable.  Its first human application was in a morgue in San Diego County, CA where they had an odor problem in one cooler.  Next it was used to contain the bodies from the Heaven's Gate cult mass suicide in New Mexico.  Since then it has been used in major disasters world wide to contain body parts.
