I was laying in bed with my girlfriend last night. We live on the outskirts of a quiet neighborhood. The back of our house faces an empty field and the back yard is not fenced. The back of the house is surrounded by a mosaic of granite slabs that make up the back porch. I normally keep a Glock 22 on the nigt stand and either an AR or 870 in the corner. The 870 happened to be there last night.
We started hearing weird noises and initially thought it was my dog running into the walls. That is a common occurrence for him. We then started to hear a male voice screaming. At first we couldnt make it out but it got closer and closer. It sounded as if the person was screaming for or at someone named Jim. We thought maybe he was calling for a lost dog, but the screaming kept getting louder and more frequent. The psychotic intensity of his screams also didn't sound like he was calling for a pet. We could also hear a vehicle idling in the distance. As I got up to investigate, we could hear footsteps outside. Then we heard loud banging on the side of the house.
I grabbed the 870 and racked it. I instructed my gf to take cover and I handed her the Glock. I instructed her to call the police. My gf then reminded me that I was naked. A minor detail that I had overlooked. I managed to throw on sweat pants and flip flops. I peaked out a side window and could see a vehicle parked sideways blocking the road. The headlights were on and it was idling. We then heard footsteps on the granite porch. My gf advised the 911 operator of the situation and requested that the police make their presence well known when they approached the house. She then put the phone on speaker. The 911 operator asked if we were armed and she answered yes. The banging got louder to the point where the operator could hear it. I shouted a few commands for whoever was outside not to attempt to enter. At this point my dog was going ape shit!
About 2-3 minutes later the noises stopped and we heard scratching tires. 5 minutes after that we heard the police at the door. I verified it was them through a side window. They requested that I come to the door unarmed. I told them the story and they started searching the area. They came back a few minutes later and asked me to come outside. They showed me some muddy footprints under my bedroom window about where the bulk of the banging was. The police left and patrolled the area for the next several hours. I know this because my ass didn't sleep at all last night. I spent the night checking doors and windows and pooping my pants every time my dog made a noise.
I am quite sure I made mistakes but holy shit this stuff happens fast.
We are currently looking for a new place to live. I hate the fact that the back of the house is so unprotected. At the time it was what was available and within our price range, but this freaked me out just a bit. Our lease is up in Feb.
I record and review episodes of the best defense. I was running your home invasion scenarios in my head. This is the second incident where this show has been very helpful. Keep up the good work and thank you once again.
As per the rules of forums. A pic of the girlfriend. She's on the far right.

Ya, I know.... She's way better looking than me.
