DHS Asks for 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO Personal Defense Weapons Also Known as Assault Weapons



The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to acquire 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO “personal defense weapons” (PDW) — also known as “assault weapons” when owned by civilians.
The solicitation, originally posted on June 7, 2012, comes to light as the Obama administration is calling for a ban on semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines.

Citing a General Service Administration (GSA) request for proposal (RFP), Steve McGough of RadioViceOnline.com reports that DHS is asking for the 7,000 “select-fire” firearms because they are “suitable for personal defense use in close quarters.”
The term select-fire means the weapon can be both semi-automatic and automatic. Civilians are prohibited from obtaining these kinds of weapons.

The RFP describes the firearm as “Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) – 5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense use in close quarters and/or when maximum concealment is required.” Additionally, DHS is asking for 30 round magazines that “have a capacity to hold thirty (30) 5.56x45mm NATO rounds.”


Republican New York state Sen. Greg Ball also issued a press release this week bringing attention to the weapons purchase request.

Calls made to DHS seeking information regarding whether or not the RFP was accepted and fulfilled were not immediately returned on Saturday.

Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Thursday introduced legislation that would enact a so-called “assault weapons” ban. The bill would ban more than 150 firearms and limit magazines to 10 rounds. There is no expiration date on Feinstein’s bill.

Just saw this.  Can you believe this crap???  As the request for proposal (RFP) refers to them as “Personal Defense Weapon (PDW)” I think all gun owners, NRA, and every pro 2nd Amendment groups need to refer to these weapons as “Personal Defense Weapons” and cram the “Assault Rifle” term down the throats of the anti-gun crowd.

Actually, Just like "Assault Rifle", a "PDW" is a tightly defined specific weapon.
MB can give the exact definition but it's a select fire ultra compact weapon like the MP 5 K .
Smaller than a sub machine gun but larger than a pistol .

50 years ago there were only 2 weapons that qualified as assault rifles, the German StG 44 and the AK .
Select fire, intermediate cartridge (ruled out the M-2 carbine ) Carbine length.
(M -16/AR 15 was till in development )

Josh Sugarman crafted the phrase "assault weapon" with the stated intention of confusing the nonshooting public into thinking that semi automatic rifles were machine guns .

I argue that he didn't craft the phrase.  He took an existing military definition of task specific weapons and incorrectly applied it to basic arms used by the public.  That is what spin doctors do, and he earned his pay plus a huge bonus for that one  >:(

"Assault rifle", select fire, intermediate caliber, carbine size, derives from the German "SturmGewehr"
"Assault weapon" it looks scary and holds a lot of bullets, derives from the anti gun propaganda campaign aimed at depriving citizens of their "inalianable" rights that the Constitution tells us "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED".

Actually, the M16 was deployed in 1963....but this being January, it is likely the deployment was a few months more than 50 years ago.
