Another public official who "gets it".

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. has a message for residents: learn how to use a gun.

With budget cutbacks putting a strain on law enforcement, simply calling 911 might not cut it in a life-or-death or situation, Clarke said in a new radio ad this month. Safety is “no longer a spectator sport,” he says. “I need you in the game.”

“With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option,” Clark adds. “You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back. But are you prepared?”

“Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there. You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. We’re partners now. Can I count on you?” he asks.

The spot has quickly earned criticism, including from the Milwaukee Deputy Sheriffs’ Association and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

Milwaukee Deputy Sheriffs’ Association president Roy Felber told the Associated Press it sounds like a call to vigilantism, while Barrett’s spokeswoman said it sounded like Clarke was “auditioning for the next Dirty Harry movie.”
But Clarke told the AP he simply wants people to know what their options are in protecting themselves.

“I’m not telling you to `Hey, pick up a gun and blast away,’” he said. “People need to know what they are doing if they chose that method – to defend themselves.”

He said self-defense may not be for everyone, but that people who want to know how should be trained properly. After budget cuts forced him to lay off 48 deputies last year, he realized he had an “untapped reserve” — the public.

“People are responsible to play a role in their own safety, with the help of law enforcement,” Clarke said. “I’m here to do my part, but we have fewer and fewer resources. We’re not omnipresent, and we have to stop giving people that impression.”

James Fendry, director of the Wisconsin Pro Gun Movement, praised the ad, telling Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “It’s never been a great option (calling 911). Unless you can take care of yourself, you’re kind of SOL.”

Very good advice.

Only thing he got wrong is thinking a persons safety was ever a spectator sport.

Only thing 911 should have ever been good for is getting there in time for you to avoid the hassle of dealing with the dead perp in your hallway.

Some more news on Sheriffs who are standing for the Constitution

LIMA - For Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey, it's a no-brainer.

If the United States Congress passes new gun control laws, including a ban on assault weapons for law abiding residents, he won't enforce it.

"Let me make it crystal clear, the Mercer County Sheriff's Office will not be confiscating firearms from law abiding citizens," Grey said.

His position comes in defiance of the National Sheriffs' Association, which represents more than 3,000 county sheriffs across the country. The NSA met this month in Washington, agreeing to support President Obama's push for tougher laws to prevent gun violence.

That decision has caused a growing divide in the group, but how big of a split is debatable. The organization's president, Larry Amerson, insists it is just a small minority of the nation's sheriffs, but every day seems to bring more news reports of sheriffs across the nation who are speaking out against the decision.
Among them are at least four sheriffs from the Lima region - Sam Crish of Allen County, Al Solomon of Auglaize, Mike Heldman of Hancock and Grey.

NSA and FOP are nothing more than unions in the pocket of the Democratic party.  Law Enforcement ADMINISTRATORS are all for whatever BHO asks for since they get $$s that way.  Actual COPS think it's a load of crap.  Trying to say it's a "small percentage" is easier than saying "We are a failing organization because no one agrees with the policy."
When seconds mean the difference between life and death, the police will be minutes away.

You are either SOLVING the problem, or you ARE the problem.

Couple of comments.

Very good presentation...well spoken and his points are driven home.

Wayne just seemed to stumble and make a poor presentation when asked.

Anyone who hears this presentation and isn't convinced or doesn't do the work to verify this facts and is convinced, that the proposed gun control measures will do nothing to prevent this kind of violence, but instead, will leave more honest citizens defenseless in the face of this violence, care nothing about the reduction of violence or the US Constitution and the preservation of our country and no amount of "reasoned conversation" with them will change that.

To refer to another thread, they are simply Quislings  ...  Traitors. ...either willfully intent on destroying the USA or "useful idiots" equally to blame.

It's a matter of common sense that I had figured out at 8 years old.
How do you expect to stop criminal actions by punishing the people who don't commit crimes and are most likely to need protection from the people who do commit crimes ?
The flaw in that logic gives away the ulterior motive.
Crime and safety are just a lie.
The real issue is control.
